The Lib Dems are supporting Gatley Carrs Conservation Group to make the Carrs nature reserve part of the Fields in Trust programme and safeguard it against any future development threats.

Such a good idea.
Wythenshawe Cricket Club, on Longley Lane, is also held by Fields in Trust. Back in the 1920s, my grandfather gave the club a substantial donation to expand and improve its facilities. He remained an active member until his death. My father played cricket and lacrosse for the club in the postwar period. He owned a single share in the limited company which owned the club (I think there were 100 shares). When you have what is legally a private enterprise, it’s obviously possible for sufficient shares to be sold to others who may wish to use the land for other purposes. Transferring “ownership” to Fields of Trust – I think it’s a 999 year lease – prevents that and ensures the land for the community.
