The off-peak return rail fare from Gatley into Manchester has gone up by a massive, inflation-busting 12.5% in the New Year price rises. An off-peak return cost £4 in December and now costs £4.50.
“How can Northern Rail possibly justify increasing the fare by 12.5 percent in just one year?” asked Cllr Iain Roberts. “How is this fair or just to hard-pressed passengers?”

Shock horror. A private company expolits its monopoly position for the benefit of its shareholders not its customers.
Time for renationalisation but there seems fat chance of that.
Whilst it is a large percentage increase I do think the new price still represents very good value when compered to driving time, fuel, stress and parking charges if you do the journey by car
I occasionally use the train – before 9.30 – to travel to Burnage and the fare is still £2.00 (£1.30 with railcard). So that journey hasn’t gone up.
On the wider issue are you saying it is LibDem policy to renationalise the railways?

I’m not a LIbDem but I’d doubt if that was their policy – even in their leftwing (ish) days, they always seemed to me to have an antipathy to public ownership.
It’s certainly the policy of the Green Party and the Labour Party.
So what answer did Cllr Iain Roberts get to his questions?
I assume these were intended to be read as rhetorical questions, as in:
“Northern Rail cannot possibly justify increasing the fares by 12.5% in just one year. This is unfair and unjust to hard-pressed passengers.”
It seems completely pointless to ask rhetorical questions.
