The Lib Dem team have congratulated the fantastic Gatley Carrs Conservation Group for securing a Green Flag award.

As the Group explain:

GATLEY CARRS LOCAL NATURE RESERVE is named as one of the best in Britain – and that’s official!

More parks and green spaces than ever will be flying the Green Flag Award this year – more than 1,600 across the UK.

The greenspace is among a record-breaking 1,686 parks and green spaces that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

The award, now celebrating its 20th year, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Gatley carrs is 19 acres of woodland, grassland and wildflower meadow and 4 acres of ponds and carr. Restored from a former landfill site it is rich in wildlife.and small piece of countryside for all to enjoy.

Peter Owen said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the fourth year from Keep Britain Tidy.

“This Award recognises and highlights that people in Gatley are benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality.

“This is an exceptional site providing an outstanding habitat for flora and fauna whilst being surrounded by modern transport systems and urban living. The area, which was filled with human refuse, has turned into a lovely little section of countryside , enticing new species into the area. The information boards provide a wealth of educational value to the visitors so does the identification labels on the majority of trees. “

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, especially as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Awards.

“All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

We have a TEDDY BEARS PICNIC on Sunday August 7th 1300 to 1630 hours with a ’Sunday Stroll’ and presentation of the Green Flag.

How about the Japanese Knotweed all over the Carrs?

    • Lib Dem Team says:

Hi Margaret – we’ve told the Council about it and we’re expecting a report back from them this week on treatment.

    • John says:

Phew! That’s a bit punchy. Why no mention of all the positive things they’ve achieved, over many years, and all voluntary.

  2. John says:

Thank you for flagging this up. What a tremendous achievement.
We are so fortunate to have this right on our doorstep thanks to the huge efforts over many years of our local, and voluntary, GCG.
