The Co-op food store by Armenique, on Church Road, Gatley, is set to close in April.
The Co-op’s aim is to open a new store in the Tatton cinema building, replacing both the existing co-op stores in the village.
That’s all we know at the moment, and we’ll let you know when we have more information. Clearly the Co-op’s plans are dependent on the Tatton development going ahead as planned.

I’m surprised it has taken them so long. It’s never seemed a sensible business plan to have the two shops operating. Closing the smaller one makes sense even if they don’t go ahead with the Tatton.
(Actually, I’m not surprised its taken them so long. I worked for the CWS in the early 1980s and decision making was not one of their strong points.)
As happy as I would be to finally see the Tatton developed, I can’t deny I’m disappointed there’s going to be a Co-op in its place. We’re getting a Costa in the village & it would have been so lovely to have had an M&S food, Waitrose or Booths at the Tatton. It was a great opportunity to bring Gatley back ‘up’ where it belongs. Not a doubt in my mind that the 2 Co-op’s will just be replaced by yet more takeaways bringing the area down even further. We’ll be rivaling the Curry Mile soon.
Iain – what is the latest on the proposed Costa in the old bank building? is there a problem with the application? The old Co-op in Cheadle was changed within a few months.
The above idea for one co-op will get my vote – but as Jane said the most likely replacements will be food outlets of one variety or another. Indicative of the times.
The planning application for Costa was approved some months ago, but it wasn’t for the old bank building. It’s the unit on the corner of Church Road and Elm Road.
It’s entirely up to the application whether, and how quickly, to progress it.
That’s good news! I’ve long thought the Co-op should have a store there, ever since the suggestion of a development with a store or other shops was first suggested. They deserve the opportunity to do so, I believe, as they have provided a good service to the community keeping both stores open despite the competition from Tesco at the far end.
