Relief road delayed by six months

by Lib Dem team on 17 April, 2017

We were disappointed to learn that the completion of the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road has been delayed by six months.

As the Council has reported:

The review has identified that there is a delay to the planned completion of the scheme which was previously autumn 2017. The review has identified a number of reasons for the delay including the poor weather/ flooding in 2016, delays with utility works being undertaken and the identification of poorer ground conditions than anticipated creating changes to the design and anticipated construction methods.

The review has identified that scheme will now be completed in spring 2018. There is ongoing work to develop a revised programme and to identify opportunities to minimise/ reduce the delay in opening the scheme. The weather over the next few months will continue to have a significant impact on the scheme’s progress.

Further to the publication of the 6 month delay on the bypass. Yet again this is bad contractual management, as the contractors must not have penalty clauses for over running – as weather and utility companies are not a surprise and should of been factored in during the tendering and planning process!

My be the powers that decided awards of contractor need a commercial lesson in how to deliver things!

I am surprised that the delay is only 6 months, that’s fantastic considering that there is never any work going on at the site, also great news for the cone rental company but not such good news for the extra pollution caused by the standing and crawling traffic which this work has created on and about the A34. More drivers have chosen to use Rat runs through our community in a vain attempt to avoid the delays.
I would like to know What Financial Penalties are being applied to the main contractors, or is this just another cover up , I am sure that the officials overseeing and awarding these contracts would be more aggressive in ensuring value for money and completion times if they personally were paying for work on their property.
