Gatley Co-op closes today

by Lib Dem team on 6 May, 2017

The smaller Gatley Co-op, near Armenique on Church Road, closes today (Saturday 6th May) so drop by if you want to get a last-minute bargain.

Our thanks to the staff who have always been fantastic – we wish you well for the future.

The Gatley Green co-op remains open. The Co-op plan is to open a new store in the former Tatton cinema, and then close the Gatley Green store. We’re assured that the Co-op will not close Gatley Green until the new store is open.

So sorry this has happened so close to where I live. Always helpful staff. Wishing you all the very best.
The one on Didsbury Road now McColls and is mega expensive. The staff said the Gatley one closing today is going to be a McColls as well. Don’t know how true this is.

It’s such a shame Gatley are behind other areas in our local shops options. Co-op is dire and maybe useful for emergencies but do we really need or want a bigger store? Would love to see a shop offering more choice, quality produce and a good organic range such as Waitrose. Would also love to see independent bakers and cake/tea shops as well as bistros. Niche shops would be fab offering a genuine alternative e.g. good book shop, antiques and ice cream parlour would be welcome as well. Most of what we have are tired and uninspiring compared to Dudsbury, Withington, Chorlton. Even Cheadle is getting its act together. The GalleyDeli is a gem as well as Loko the handbag shop and 2nd hand book store. Nothing against the asian takeaways and restaurants apart from the food is dire. Some genuine, well made asian food and healthy fast food joints for the kids would be a gold mine.

Much as I applaud your vision for Gatley, it is a matter of straight business economics why it isn’t going to happen

When we had a greengrocers, I used to do all my fruit and veg shopping there. I suggested to Nick Mundy once that he stock organics and he said that he had tried it but folk wouldnt pay the premium. And, as we know, in due course, folk wouldnt buy enough of anything to keep the business going.

And, when Piccolo opened, they were going to have an ice cream shop on the end. Came to nothing as they must have concluded there would be insufficient business.

And, to be blunt, no-one in their right mind is going to open a bookshop in Gatley. No-one in their right mind is going to open a bookshop anywhere. The internet, with the likes of Amazon, has effectively killed the industry. You simply wouldnt risk your money to invest in such a shop.

On the bright side of things, we do have nice places for a cake and a cuppa. Try Bill’s if you havent already.

Have tried Bills, John and its lovely and a welcome addition and just what is needed. Not sure how long Piccolos ice cream parlour was open for but seemed to take ages to open and then shut down very quickly. The ice cream vans outside the schools are extremely popular so why not a parlour? Organic does not have to be expensive especially these days but a decent fruit/veg shop wood be good enough as well as a fishmonger. People are less likely to buy from tired, old fashioned looking shops. Thats just a marketing fact. If shops look unappealing, cheap, offer little value or choice you will not attract customers. Quality does not have to equate to being expensive. We go to Wales often and their little unique shops are thriving because they have got the balance right between price, quality and offering something different to big supermarkets. Agree with what you said about a bookshop but a 2nd handbook shop with cafe should do well or as is the latest fashion a cafe where you can hire boardgames and play whilst there. If others can do it….

So sorry. As a disabled customer I was treated with help and support. Best wishes and thanks to all the staff.

The Co-op products may not rival some larger supermarkets but to me the food quality is good and varied and other essentials are OK. But they have one overriding advantage – they are morally and socially (small s) driven. The £ sign means return for value not medals to adorn balance sheets and fancy shirts! I shall certainly continue to shop with them.

  5. Ben says:

I agreecwith Sofia. Good points. Co-op is limited. Staff lacking some customer service skills. Poor value. But Tesco and Sainsbury is not far behind. Cheap quality food with mainstream prices.

  6. Peter Rowley says:

Good to see some people standing up for the Coop and the great service they provide.
I would doubt that Gatley has right demographics for Waitrose to open a store and having seen a number of small Waitrose stores my view is that the Coop food stores are head and shoulders above them in terms of range, pricing and ethical stance.

  7. JohnG says:

I liked David’s post. No doubt some will say a business trying to be morally and socially driven has no chance, but i think that’s a wrong premise. I too shall certainly continue to shop with them.

Sofia – a great post on May 7th.
Re do we really need or want a bigger store? I live in Gatley. For me, no – and certainly not in the old Tatton building – but i do think that some in our community do need a Co-op in Gatley. Elderly people’s habits of a lifetime must not be dismissed as just being out of touch etc. I hope that the other Co-op will keep open. And i hope that their Directors read all our comments.
