Report back: Cheadle Area Committee, 26th September 2017

by Lib Dem team on 27 September, 2017

Thank you to everyone who came to Cheadle Area Committee last night. It was the longest I can remember – nearly four hours (we allow people to leave early if they want).

Here’s what was discussed and decided:

  • Our Area Conditions Officer reported back on work that had been done around Cheadle and Gatley. At the Lib Dem’s request, the community payback team have been working in Cheadle, clearing up the village centre. They removed 4 tonnes of detritus from the passageways between Wilmslow Road and Whitegates road! A second round of weed-spraying is about to get underway across Stockport borough.
  • A bollard on Cheadle High Street that had been knocked over and then repaired with tarmac around the base has, at the request of the Lib Dems, been properly repaired with paving to match the rest of the area.
  • A Council officer introduced the refresh of the SEMMM strategy. This is the strategy for all forms of transport: road, rail, tram, bike, walking, bus, freight etc. across South East Manchester, being consulted on over the coming weeks. It’s important: no-one knows right now how we will deal with all the extra traffic created by thousands of new houses and we need an answer. We’ll be speaking to residents about this to get your ideas over the next few weeks.
  • Gatley Scouts were awarded £960 towards a defibrulator.
  • Planning application 64779 to build a new mosque and community centre on the existing site, and add to the current onsite car parking. The decision will be taken by the Planning and Highways Committee, but the Cheadle Area councillors were unanimous in supporting the application – but with strict conditions around parking, traffic management and the construction phase.
  • Planning application 66326 to build a new primary and secondary school, and everything that goes with them, alongside Cheadle College on the existing college site on Cheadle Road, Cheadle. This will also be decided by Planning and Highways Committee. Councillors had a number of concerns – mostly around traffic, parking and whether the evidence really supported new schools in that location.
  • A proposal for new bridleway/cyclepath along the line of the existing footpath from Demmings Road, Cheadle to Bramall Hall was agreed.
  • A report on Anti-social behaviour at Cheadle Mill, requested by Iain, was discussed in detail with agreement that the Council would work with local landowners to try and move forward.
  • The proposal for double yellow lines on Church Road, Gatley at the entrance to the Tesco car park was approved.
  • A proposal for double yellow lines at the junction of Whitegates and Ashfield (in the area on the junction where the highway code says people should not park) was approved.
  • A report on security at Mill Lane cemetery was considered.

All the reports can be seen here.

  1. DR C says:

Double yellow lines in front of the Gatley Tesco be welcomed, but, it would make sense to also ‘push’ the pavement out a little more.

As for the double yellow lines across the road down Stonepail Road, methinks they need extending further along on the western side well beyond the bridge parapet.

    • John says:

I can’t fathom why you think double yellow lines there will help anything. If Tesco’s carpark if full, which it often is and a good sign that people still shop in a diminishing Gatley, where do they park? Up the side roads like Birch Rd and Hawthorn Rd – great for the people that live there! And your pavement idea is totally stupid. I want Gatley village to be a shopping-friendly place for all, whatever their age and whether they come by car, bike or on foot.

      • DR C says:

You obviously need to ‘plumb new depths’ !
Dammed motorists can always park further along Church Road, and, now that no buses terminate in Gatley – the designated bus parking ‘bay’ across the road from the store should be reduced in length. The length of one bus would suffice.

  2. Roy says:

Push the pavement out narrow the road and wait for the accidents to happen

    • DR C says:

“DOH”!…If you are referring to my suggestion – pushing the pavement out need only be to bring it in line with the rest of the road before and after the store !!

  3. Roy says:

Building the new Mosque will be done whilst the existing Mosque is still standing and being used, what assurances are in place to ensure that upon completed the old existing Mosque will be demolished. I say this because it appears to me that it would be tempting to keep both open, and if this was allowed the traffic would be terrible for the local residents.

  4. Roy says:

Proposed new School what would its catchment area be and can we be assured that no pupils living outside of the area will accepted ?

    • David Maycock says:

as regards schools, half of Wythenshawe goes to Kingsway but if i use the resources in manchester central library i have to pay because i come from Stockport ?

  5. Alan says:

    Roy
It’s a free school apart from the money it takes away from state education, they can take whomever they wish

  6. Roy says:

Hi Alan if you are correct then I think the application should be refused , the local area cannot continue trying to absorb increased traffic flows we are approaching grid lock.

  7. Alan says:

And what will happen exactly if the mosque breaks those rules – as they surely will!
