Parking price hike “gambling with Cheadle’s future”

by Lib Dem team on 8 November, 2017

At a time when we’re seeing a record slowdown in non-food sales across the UK, Labour’s plan to hike Cheadle’s short-stay car parking charges by 67% is gambling with Cheadle’s future, Cllr Iain Roberts has said.

“With so many other places people can park for free, shoppers – who are already spending less – may decide to go elsewhere. Just a small drop in trade could see shops closing down, affecting the village and seeing the Council lose money. This is the wrong time to be making it more expensive to shop in Cheadle – it’s a gamble we should not take.” said Iain.

I agree on this point Iain. Why can’t we have say 1.5hrs free of charge and then hike it up thereafter? I’m not sure, but I would say most shoppers wouldn’t stay longer and it’s enough time to spend money in the village shops, but keeping away people who would stay there all day? I also don’t think it was necessary to approve double yellow lines from Warren Ave to Broadway. I know cars park there but it’s not an obstruction and it is hampering the already difficult parking situation. Those cars will park where?? I presume they are workers in the village and need somewhere. Thanks.

Iain – I have asked you this twice before and have yet to receive an answer. If you regain control of the council will you reverse the increase?

Also I agree with Angie about the double yellow lines from Warren Ave to Broadway – makes no sense.

What will happen to the bike lanes there? There are few enough bike lanes in the Stockport area as it is.

Makes no sense either for the 20mph limit to begin where it does on Wilmslow Road….it should be further along, beyond Warren Avenue. There it would be safer for all , including drivers exiting Warren Avenue.

Sensational headline grabber but can I remind everyone it was liberal proposal in increase hour charge 50 percent ,increase the 3 hour charge by double and a 8 hour charge by over 200 percent in 2016. Even more sensational ,if we blog, let’s have a bit of balance as a standard please

Obviously Bruce and angie don’t go down wilmslow road to cheadle very often cars parked along there are an obstruction and the bike lanes are unusable, the whole of that area is one large car park. More yellow lines are needed all round the cheadle area some places the pavements are blocked and walkers, wheelchair users, and prams can’t get down them.

Val – the ‘bike lanes you refer to are not for the exclusive use by cyclists and it is quite legal for motorists to park in them. I have been around that area on many occasions and have never seen any parked vehicles causing an obstruction.
More double yellows will result in motorists parking elsewhere – not solving the problem just moving it elsewhere. Remember the Libdems were in control of council for 18 years so they have had plenty of opportunities to resolve the parking problems.

  7. Margaret Cummins says:

Maxwell car sales corner of Manchester Road is a case in point. However, some of the pavements are a hazard themselves even with no cars parked on them, I.e. Water gathers filled with slimy leaves and in very cold weather, iced over). Never mind, the NHS will pick up the bill!

I don’t understand why double yellow lines are being painted from warren to Broadway – is it a safety issue Iain? – I would have thought not as wilmslow road is a wide road. Double yellow line parking is rarely enforced by local parking attendants anyway so it seems a lot of time and money being spent for no benefit. I think also one of the questions asked here previously is if the control of stockport council went to the libdems would they guarantee that parking charges would be decreased or at least held at current levels until a borough wide review of parking and charges has been held ? What are our thoughts on this Iain please, thanks

We need incentives for people to leave cars at home in decent public transport.

  10. Robert Cohen says:

What seems to be forgetton in putting down double yellers’ is the potential reduction in saleability of houses where owners and there families/friends/visitors cannot park close by, particularly during weekends and evenings. There is no flexibility. As has been said before on this site, dealing with the inconsiderate drivers in the centre of Cheadle who park on restricted lines (8am – 6pm) and come up one ways the wrong way cause more danger than parking between Warren Avenue and Broadway

  11. Trevor Gaunt says:

Obviously, none of you people moaning about yellow lines on Wilmslow Road lives in the vicinity or cycles there. Do you seriously believe councillors or council officers dreamt up the yellow lines all by themselves just to make parking in Cheadle more difficult? Better public transport is the only sensible solution, but in the meantime safety should take precedence over convenience for selfish parkers.

  12. Kerry Armitage says:

Better public transport? Put that in your Christmas Cracker and pull it, it’s a corker! Cheadle has the worst public transport service in the whole of Greater Manchester, not just Stockport, for a suburb of similar size – that’s a fact! No Tram stop (unlike most other of the ten Greater Manchester councils – FACT! No train station, unlike many other, smaller village-type centres – FACT! Appalling road junctions such as the A34 interchange – FACT! A lack of a half decent bus service, buses that are continually late, overpacked and often don’t stop due to being crowded – FACT! Key bus routes that are being reduced or in some cases axed – FACT! No sign of a train/Tram stop in Chealde for probably the next 20 years, if not longer or if at all – FACT! Greater Manchester and Stockport is growing at a remarkable pace which is a good thing, but Cheadle’s public transport and transport policy is NOT working – FACT! Traffic light/pedestrian crossing that continue to be a hazard for pedestrians crossing them, so instead let’s build more along Chealde High Street rather than sorting out the hazardous ones – FACT! It’s amazing that all of these councillors, yes all of them, spend too much time fighting, arguing and blaming each other for under-delivering and over-promising, year after year after year! Cheadle had a train station not that many years ago, and the wise decided to close it, sell of the land and waste the income. No wider thinking. Now council tax is on the rise again, what happened to the Lib Dem plan of centralising all of the local authority outposts, such as the Ashlea house in Cheadle as part of the new multi-million £ development of the council offices! This site is one of 12 in Stockport should have been sold to either reduce any council tax rise and/or been ploughed back into a public transport system that works – FACT! Ashlea House alone in Cheadle has a market value close to £950,000. It’s a poor show but a good reflection that the areas councillors and council is not fit for purpose – FACT!
