Tatton planning permission finally granted

by Lib Dem team on 10 November, 2017

Finally – after nearly two and half years – the planning application to develop the Tatton has been granted by the Council.

The Lib Dem team have supported the application – for a large convenience store and apartments for older people – but it’s taken a long time to get through the system.

“Now Dickens, the owners of the site, need to get on and develop.” said Iain “No more excuses, it’s time to get this sorted.”

I have heard it will be a co op, am I correct

  2. Jane says:

Fingers crossed we will start to see things happening soon. Been an eyesore for far too long. What s going to happen to the other coop?

  3. Jane Atherton says:

Another useless store. Especially a Co-op. How many such stores do we need in a half square mile. Bonkers. Coop is hardly the store people will rush to with Aldi Tesco and Sainsburys nearby. Either a niche store e.g. Waitrose or an organic store would have been welcomed or preferably it should have been turned into a community facility as said so many times, library, cafe, sports facilities e.g keep fit classes, gallery, space for workshops and still kept apartments upstairs

Hi Jane – we believe the plan is to move the Co-op from Gatley Green to the Tatton, so we’ll have one supermarket at each end of the village. Of course, that would leave a unit that another store could move into.

The problem with other uses is that they don’t stack up economically. It has indeed been said many times that it could be a community facility, and it would be a great thing to do. Unfortunately, no-one has come forward with the money needed to do it.

      • Jane Atherton says:

I take your point Iain but similar Regeneration plans seem to be working well all over the country especially in Manchester. Bolton is following suit and I have also seen great examples in Wales. Both do not get much funding but are clever in securing funding. The problem is you need a proative Council who will seek public and private investment. Stockport constantly blame its continuous failures on money. The town centre is a dire embarrassment and the villages are becoming havens for takeaways and charity shops. The lack of proactiveness, creativity, strategic planning and investment is shocking. Why are you all sat there waiting for someone to drop millions into your lap. What are you doing for investment into our communities. Gatley does not need a Coop. It needs an injection of life and resources to keep a community going or you will kill it off.

        • Tony Kaye says:

I agree with Jane. I am delighted that at last the eyesore stands some chance of removal. I hope they demolish it and don’t try to retain something that is of no real historical value.
I agree that the idea of a Co-op is so disappointing. It is a store I really don’t like and does not bring added value. Co-op stores are generally a mess. Yes, anything is better than what we have now, but a council with proactive ideas, and a positive and enthusiastic approach would benefit the community. I realise that this land and property is privately owned so I assume the council has little choice, in these circumstances.

  4. Derek Brennan says:

What Gatley really needs is car parking

  5. Jane says:

One can only guess what the Coop opposite Gatley Green will become if that’s what is moving to The Tatton.

  6. David Porter says:

Great can’t wait. But there’s always someone who you can’t please. Just be grateful we have housing for the elderly. the co-op are a good shop so no complaints here.

  7. Stuart Thompson says:

I am not aware that either Jane or Tony have not stood for election dedicated to raising money to back their pipedreams. We live in a real world where we have to do the best we can despite the depredations of the Brexiteers and their friends

  8. John Hartley says:

    Some good news at last!

I know from the original proposal that the site owners needed to include a convenience store in their proposals, to meet their profit forecasts. I can only assume that the Co-op made the best offer to be that partner – lets face it, a community that cannot even support having a greengrocer is not going to attract the likes of Waitrose or M & S, however much some of us might like to think that’s not the case..

As for it moving from its present location, it makes perfect business sense – taking it to the other end of the commercial area from Tesco. Certainly means I’ll be using it more (although my preference has always been to use it rather than Tesco.

  9. Jane Atherton says:

These are not pipe dreams but realism. Regeneration is active in many areas of the north west. Stockport Council is failing the community. If you are happy it has taken over 10 years to convert a prime site into a Coop – you deserve the Council you get.

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Jane – no one is happy with the time it’s taken, but sites in private ownership do unfortunately often take as long or longer to be developed. Under the Lib Dems Stockport invested over a billion pounds in the borough and has brought many unused and under-used sites into good use. I’m very happy to defend that record, and to compare it to other councils.

      • Jane Atherton says:

Iain maybe back in the 1980s and 1990s planning took so long. We see buildings and house flying up all over. The Barnes hospital development did not seem to take that long despite the pressures it will cause on an already failing road traffic system. Maybe because of the profit involved. Call my cynical. I would love to know what Stockport has ploughed back into Gatley for the community and regeneration that you are so proud off. Please share

At least coop dont do business with Israeli illegal produce grown on occupied land… a proper ethical business… the wilmslow coop is amazing… dont know why they wouldn’t replicate the standards in that store

  11. Lois Evans says:

Have you considered the increase in traffic on already crowded roads? Will the plan include sufficient car parking spaces? Or will people try to use the parking spaces at Gatley medical centre?
Please say these issues have been given full consideration in the plans

  12. DR C says:

    Unfortunate photograph…
Not so much the Three Amigos – more the Three Obliquos ! ?

  13. Kerry Armitage says:

Spot Jane, useless council with old fashioned thinking that’s leaving Cheadle and Gatley in the mid-80s!

  14. Jane Atherton says:

Also the offices on Park Road/Stonepail Road have been demolished and the land being built on rapidly quickly. No communication on that on the newsletter. Excuses and old fashioned thinking when suits

  15. Dillon Farge says:

Great, more old people’s homes in our village centres. I see recently the Travis Perins site in Cheadle also has approval for yet another old people housing units, how many more of these do we really need in our village centres when there’s already enough of these!
