Very Interesting
Thanks for the information Iain. I look forward to their return in Spring.
Fascinating stuff. I had no idea that the farm dated back quite so far. I’d come across the Worthingtons in the census when I was writing my recent local history booklet (Gatley – Then and Now – published by the Village Partnership – with all proceeds going to it) but my focus had been more on Gatley Hill House, so I didnt delve into the farm’s history too much.
The 1851 census notes that the farm was 60 acres. The farmer then was Samuel Worthington who lived there with his wife, Ann, and their eleven children. Probably, as with most of the farms in the area, there will have been some livestock, with much of the land used for growing root vegetables for market.
I’m sure you could take part in the dig when they come back in the Spring, John.
