Lib Dems act on Conservation Area concerns

by Lib Dem team on 20 December, 2017

Keith, Iain and Graham have taken action on three issues residents have raised in the Cheadle and Gatley Conservation Areas. As ever, we thank residents and the Cheadle Civic Society for their help.

We support local businesses in our villages, but it’s important for those businesses to do their bit in following the rules to stop the village centres becoming ever-more tatty and run down.

Turkish Barbers

The Council has agreed to take enforcement action over an excessively bright and garish LED sign at the Turkish barbers on the White Hart junction in Cheadle. We first spoke to the owner to see if the situation could be resolved amicably, but that approach did not succeed so we – with the Civic Society – have gone down the official route.

2A Wood Street

Advertising signs on 2A Wood Street, Cheadle will be removed in February. The large signs need planning permission, which they do not have. One sign is lit and the lighting for this will be turned off.

Occasions, Gatley

A Fireworks pop-up shop in Occasions, Gatley (on the corner of Church Road and Elm Road) stopped trading soon after bonfire night, but the temporary signs are still up and looking increasingly tatty. We have asked the council to investigate and they are treating it as fly-posting.

Stop Cheadle village centre becoming ever-more tatty and run down! Is this a xmas porky or what! Have you seen the state of some of the premises along the High Street and Wlimslow Road? Clearly not! Enforce those landlords and businesses who’s frontages are falling down into disrepair before you start on a new business that takes pride in their frontage!

Having something as a Conservation Area gives the council certain legal powers. It doesn’t give the council the legal power to force landlords to spend money on general upkeep. I’m sorry that the law doesn’t give us the power to do what you want.

  2. Sam Blyther says:

Yes it does Iain. I previously worked for Sheffield Council and we enforced landlords to do these things. Trouble with SMBC is that they have tunnel vision!

  3. Bob Ashworth says:

All these new barber shops popping up everywhere are cash only businesses. Doesn’t take a genius to work out why

Tidy the village and make it safer by removing the numerous “A” frame adverts on the public footpath.

Thank you Iain, for targeting that dreadful LED notice. But I agree with Dillon – the High Street and Wilmslow Road look a mess in certain areas. All owners of the shops should be ‘required’ to keep them in a state of good repair. Maybe Quality Save could be persuaded to keep their tat indoors?

Sue, in some respects I agree with your point of view. However, we are required to pay local taxes which ought to support local views. My aspect is that Cheadle High Street and its core is poorly served By SMBC…viz. pavements, parking infractions, lack of policing, littering,pavement_lack of protections by way of bollards, failure to reinstate pavements, blocking of pavements with A boards ,cycles on pavements, failure to clean grids, pavements not reinstated as per programme promised….I could go on, but like, you I have had more than enough.

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Janet – I see what you’re saying. Where would you suggest we look to as a model of how it can be done better? Certainly when I talk to councillors from across the country, the issues you raise are issues that seem to be raised everywhere so there may be no easy solution.

  7. Margaret Cummins says:

Let it be known that Cheadle does actually extend beyond Wilmslow Road and the High Street, namely Stockport Road where there are shops and houses but terrible walking conditions. The fact that a stretch of pavement that I often complain as being waterlogged hasn’t been swept of the Autumn leaf sludge comes as no surprise, almost a cynical decision!
