Iain calls for Altrincham/ Northenden resurfacing to be sorted

by Lib Dem team on 17 January, 2018

Cllr Iain Roberts has called for the “surface dressing” treatment of Northenden Road and Altrincham Road in Gatley to be done properly.

“After several months the road remains in a poor state. It’s uneven, and already getting worn away. Surface dressing can be an effective way to improve road surfaces, but something has clearly gone wrong here. Defects can be seen along the length of the roads.” said Iain.

As a cyclist who regularly uses this stretch of road, I couldn’t agree more. Further more the miserable line that denotes the cycle lane and loose grit makes the road a poor and unsafe experience. The current state seems worse than it was before the work started!

What about Hawthorn Road, Gatley? – at its western end??
In case you (councillor/s) deferred such work in the past (as requested by Moi!) because tha lived there (your way of getting your own back on me?!) – you can put that grudge to one side now – one has moved!
In the 32 years tha lived on that road at that end of it – it was left to decay (only the occasional little patch up?).
What it requires is nothing less than a whole new road! – new curbstones and resurfacing of both the pavement AND the road.

Hawthorn is one of many roads that need more than a patch-up. I can honestly say that it has never occured to me for a moment to defer work anywhere – certainly not on Hawthorn.

Quite the opposite: it was me who fought for, and secured, the £100 million investment that’s seeing roads like Hawthorn properly repaired across the borough. And it’s me who’s now pushing to make sure the work is done properly.

Both Gatley Road and Wilmslow Road were surfaced dressed to a poor standard which also led to blocked drains.
Whilst I agree that the Gatley road works need rectifieing, the point we should be asking is why after already having at least 2 other roads surfaced dressed to a Sub Standard are we still using the Same Contractor and allowing the Same Rubbish Work to be carried out, Do we need to replace the Councils Clark of Works.

Whilst I agree that certain roads have been poorly repaired, try driving on main roads in Manchester and Trafford (e.g.Kingsway, Altrincham Road & Palatine Road) where there are worse potholes than those in Stockport. So perhaps we should thank Iain for at least getting some repairs done. If people would report the faults to SMBC (on-line seems to work best) there should be continued, if slow, improvement.

`i agree that there are some wonderful paved areas along the road into Stockport but many many times I have wondered when it is going to be our turn I.e. The pavements from Councillor Lane to the start of Cheadle High St. I have taken several photos recently to display the terrible walking conditions that exist on this route. How you can ignore the plight of the little school children that have to endure paddling through the ponds along Stockport road escapes me. Or is it as I suspect, the fact that I keep going on about it annoys you.

Just to say that “surface dressing” never really works for long and makes a horribly rough surface. Proper new tarmac may cost more but might be better in the long run?
