Stockport Council publishes brownfield development map

by Lib Dem team on 25 January, 2018

Like all councils, Stockport has been looking at whether it can find more brownfield sites for development. The idea is to build the homes and business premises we need on previously-developed sites where possible, reducing the need for building on the Green Belt or greenfield sites.

You can see the map – and the register of sites, on the Council website here.

There’s little surprising that’s come forward in Cheadle and Gatley: the Tatton site and Travis Perkins site both have approved planning applications.

The local shops/flats next to the old High Grove pub have also been brought forward. They have an approved planning application to refurbish the building and add another storey, but with no sign of that happening it may be that the owners are looking to sell the site to a developer to demolish and build something new.

The site of the now-closed chippy on Ashfield Road is in the mix, as is the Bullocks depot off Stockport Road but that’s about it.

That might be seen as a positive: the council is saying there’s very limited scope to pack in more houses in our patch, and many of us are worried about the traffic and pressure on services that new building can bring.

On the other hand, those homes have to go somewhere and if they’re not in our existing towns and villages then they’ll be on the Green Belt: the fields around Heald Green, Cheadle Hulme, Woodford and High Lane – and the people who live there will still need to get around.

We are expecting the second draft of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) in July when we’ll see how far Mayor Andy Burnham has delivered on his election pledge to only allow building in the Green Belt if it’s social housing.

Depends what the broader meaning of Social Housing is. I personally thing it should be housing built by councils of housing associations for rental or Part ownership and not big 4 bedroom houses. Affordable, first time buyers houses in my opinion.

    Bullocks depot? Are bullocks closing/moving?

Not as far as this Bullys traveller knows, but, it has always surprised me that they have not sold the site.
One can only guess, but, methinks their site would be ideal for housing AND the sale price for such a prime location would be far more than the cost of relocating to a more industrial location?
It would be over sentimental AND far too much of a clichĂ© to describe their premises as iconic, but, one cannot think of any other purpose built bus garage from the same era anywhere else in this part of the country – just hope it is not listed!

I believe the The Travis Perkins site is in the Conservation area. There seem to be plans to build a development of retired housing called Adlington on the site.

  4. Jill Robertson says:

Why’s it being called Adlington? Surely they could have come up with a better name? There’s alreasy Adlington near Poynton and Adlington Walk, paet of Merseyway in Stockport. How confusing this is going to be. Would have been better to named it after a local Cheadle nobleperson; Ockleston Park, Bob Telford Way, Watts Drive or even Iain Roberts Avenue!

  5. Andrew Ashworth says:

A car park would have been more useful on the Travis Perkins site.
