Sharston Link motorway works

by Lib Dem team on 26 February, 2018

Homes near the motorway in Cheadle and Gatley have had this letter delivered, about safety barrier and drainage works on the Sharston Link (M56 J1-4).

Works will start around 5th March and continue for approximately seven months, taking place between 9pm and 5am Monday to Friday.

Narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit will apply 24 hours a day throughout the works. There will also be some overnight lane closures and some total closures. The works may cause some noise.

Here’s the text of the letter:

M56 Sharston Link – Safety barrier and drainage upgrade works

Highways England is responsible for managing and maintaining the motorway and trunk road network in Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and South Lancashire.

I am writing to inform you of works to upgrade the safety barrier within the central reservation and verges on the M56 between Junctions 1 and 4, otherwise known as Sharston Link. This will include works to upgrade the drainage and cabling in the area. Our aim is to address the number of flooding hot spots, improving safety and prolonging the life of the asset.

Works are due to start on or shortly after 5 March 2018 for approximately seven months. bridge deck. This will take place between the hours of 21:00 and 05:00, Monday to Friday. Please note that some element of daytime working will be required to suit certain operation of works.

In order to facilitate and carry out the works safely, temporary narrow lanes and a reduced speed limit of 50mph are required on the M56 between Junctions 1 and 4. This will be in place 24 hours on both sides of the carriageway throughout the scheme.

During the works, we will also require either overnight lane closures or total closures. This is subject to the type of work being carried out and the location. We will ensure advance warning signage is in place once the dates have been confirmed. Localised signed diversion routes will be in place during any overnight total closure.

When carrying out certain elements of works, you may notice an increase of noise levels in the area. Please be assured that we will do everything possible to minimise the noise disruption throughout the works.

Works are subject to weather conditions therefore dates may change at short notice.

Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald (BBMM) will be delivering these works on Highways England’s behalf.

We would like to apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause you. If you wish to discuss this project further or have any questions, please contact our 24hr Highways England Customer Care team by phone on 0300 123 5000 or email info@highwaysengland.co.uk.

They’ve had closures of the Sharston junction for months and months already last year, then most of this year already resurfacing https://highwaysengland.co.uk/projects/m56-sharston-bypass/ now ANOTHER 7 months for another project. Why can’t they combine all the work affecting this stretch and do it during one set of closures? There just doesn’t appear to be any co-ordination from Balfour between one project and the others (I emailed them abut one night when the M60 was closed at opposite sides of Manchester and they admitted they don’t co-ordinate the projects). Could they not be asked to co-ordinate projects rather than have impacts like the Sharston junction closed at nights for over a year?
