The Lib Dem team have spoken to those involved and understand that work could start on the Tatton redevelopment in the next few days or weeks.
The site, owned by Dickens Property Group, has planning permission for a large convenience store (which looks set to be a Co-op) along with 36 apartments which will be reserved for people over the age of 50.
The planning application – one of the longest in the history of Stockport – dragged on for over two years but was finally approved by the Council earlier this year.
“We have worked with the developers and council officers to get this over the line. As a privately-owned site, it’s not been easy, but we’ve never given up. It finally looks like work will be starting soon, but we won’t let up the pressure until the development is completed.” said Cllr Iain Roberts.
The new development will retain the art deco frontage, with the rest of the site being a new build. The private road in front of the Tatton will be resurfaced and have new parking bays put in.
“Some problems get solved quickly. This is one we’ve had to keep on at over the years, but the signs are looking more positive than ever before,” Iain added.

Please forgive the cynicism, but I’ll believe this when I see work actually underway. Fingers crossed, of course.
Couldn’t agree more, John. Good progress has been made, but for me the job’s not done until it’s all completed and I’ll be taking nothing for granted! We’ve been promised progress before only to see it stall.
“UGH” – keeping that out of keeping ‘light-weight’ art deco frontage? ?
I agree it would look so much better without the ugly art deco frontage but after seventeen years looking at a wreck of a building then I no longer care!
Well I for one will be delighted if this comes off. It’s dragged on for way too long and the eyesore has been letting this area down. If work starts, then it’s time to stop the criticism and Gatley residents need to support and celebrate the development although I suspect some people will just never be happy. Fingers crossed.
Iain,
May I suggest giving the Co-operative Group head office PR department a ring? They will know when the planned opening date for the food store will be, subject to the normal caveats. The fit out costs (probably circa £500k) will be built into their new store opening budget. If the building work starts in the near future it might be possible to get the new store open in 2018 but it is only my guess.
What an excellent idea, Peter.
Personally, I favour retaining the existing frontage, suitably cleaned up, which has been a central feature in Gatley for years. Its part of Gatley’s heritage just as the REX is in Wilmslow.
I agree with keeping the frontage, cleaned up will give the development a bit of character
Yes I agree with keeping the frontage too. It does have character and It will look good when its cleaned up.
