Gatley station gains 65,000 passengers in five years

by Lib Dem team on 6 June, 2018

Figures from the Centre for Towns show 65,000 more passenger journeys from Gatley station in 2016/17 compared to 2011/12.

The numbers, which use the latest available figures, show annual journeys from Gatley up from nearly 279,000 to more than 356,000 over the five year period.

Most other stations have also seen increases as rail travel has grown more popular. An exception is  East Didsbury – probably because a lot of people who used to use the train are now taking the tram.

“As more people rely on trains to get about, it’s even more essential that the Northern Rail mess is sorted out quickly,” said Graham Greenhalgh.

The passenger numbers, along with other data, can be found on the Centre for Towns website.

There’s a dotted line in the map which appears to be the tram network. Interestingly the unbuilt section appears to bypass the Cheadle area- I hope I’m mistaken…

I guess the increased figures do not include those travelling on Concessionary fares (eg for OAPs). Loss of frequency affects a much larger demographic than the figures suggest.

    Alan,

The unbuilt section is proposed to follow the former railway line from Didsbury until it nears Stockport. It is not proposed to go to Cheadle.

Cheadle needs its heavy rail station back.

A Cheadle station for tram or train would go on the Mid-Cheshire line connecting into Stockport and Manchester. The most likely location for a station is behind the old Travis Perkins site, off Brook Road.

  5. Iain Roberts says:

Bob – as far as I know, annual figures for all stations are based on surveys that count all the passengers, rather than ticket sales.

I previously read your comments re the reduction of passenger trains on the Gatley line.

This has given way for the line to be used by goods trains.
On Monday of this week 7 goods trains passed in just over 2 hours.

Previously together with neighbours we had a meeting at the tennis club and some time later I had a meeting together with a neighbour from Belmont road with Mark Hunter. It appeared at that time the trains should have been routed via Cheadle Hulme Line but it was easier for the signal man to find gaps on Gatley line.

    Is this the case now?

    Regards Peter

      Hi Peter,

I don’t know if that’s the case now. I have been told that Northern Rail were late applying for slots and many of the ones they wanted had gone. Whether freight trains played any part in that I don’t know.

For me, the biggest problem is the gap between the 8.22 and the 9.06. For some reason the train that runs at 47 minutes past the hour doesn’t run at 8.47. And the 8.22 is often cancelled and the 9.06 late. Which means not being able to get in office much before 10.00 am. Luckily I have flexible working so can live with this better than others. In desperation last week when three trains were cancelled on the trot I drove to the tram station. But the car park was rammed, Everyone else is having the same idea!

  8. Alan says:

Car park is always rammed – it’s a reliable service. Street parking is the only answer unfortunately until themout another level on the car park!
