Council provides info on plan for Roscoe’s traffic lights

by Lib Dem team on 2 July, 2018

When the Council put out the plans for changes at Roscoe’s roundabout, we said that residents would want to see the evidence to convince us that putting traffic lights on all the junctions would be an improvement. We’ve now been sent this modelling information, which will also be available at the drop-in sessions.

The drop-in sessions where you can speak to Council officers and have your say are:

  • Tuesday 3rd July 3.30-8pm, Cheadle Heath Primary School
  • Wednesday 4th July 3.30-8pm, Upper Rooms, Wilmslow Road, Cheadle (above Tesco)

Nick from the Council says says:

I attach further information as requested on the operational performance of the roundabout in the AM and PM peaks.  This shows that there will be a great reduction in queues on Stockport Road (westbound) and that there will be no congestion on the other arms of the junction.  The signals will necessarily cause queues when they are on red but as you can see from the diagrams that the queues will be short and will clear each cycle.   Please note that the traffic flows are from the A6MARR traffic model hence they take account of changes to traffic flow due to that scheme (2017 being the modelled opening year) and take account of traffic growth to 2032 as forecast at the time A6MARR was modelled.

The modelling suggests that having traffic lights around the roundabout will make queues slightly longer from Cheadle, but a great deal shorter from Cheadle Heath, and that improvement will continue even with the growth in traffic forecast over the next 14 years.

I just twisted my neck trying to read the writing on this…can I sue you?

Ohh it’s a roundabout! Looking at that plan I thought it was a proposal for a fair ground … lots of colourful lights, good job I’m (or any cyclists) are colourblind!)

Already feel like a prisoner living in Cheadle surrounded by roadworks enough is enough trafficking from lights at rosgoes will be backed up to Cheadle Cheadle crawl that was years ago is already harassing stupid I’ll thought out idea knew these slights of things would happen once labour got its foot in the door at Stockport

Re- The development at Roscoes roundabout/ Abney Hall Park. Do the Lib/dems support this?

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Hazel – we’ve not had the opportunity to get together and discuss the plans yet, but we’re keen to hear what people think and for everyone to contribute to the consultation.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but is the plan not showing that the main benefit from signalising the roundabout will be to the Stockport Road Westbound arm i.e. travelling from the Farmers? This seems a little bit odd considering that this arm of the junction is already signalised.

Also when you compare the two scenarios….i.e 2032 ‘without signals’ to the 2032 ‘with signals’ there is a massive change in the operation of the junction, with a reduction in the average maximum queue by 1098.4m. Personally even given that traffic signals can in some cases manage traffic flow more efficiently I don’t think this is realistic. Are SMBC really saying that by putting traffic signals on the other arms of the junction will result in one arm of the junction which is already signalised operating so much better???? Personally I’m not so sure that such massive improvements makes sense.

Please, please, please before proceeding with any new traffic lighting proposal fix the traffic lights and crossing by the george and dragon in chealde where it meets the manchester rd, appauling crossing that has seen many accidents and more near misses over the recent few years, council and councillors appear to do nothing about this.

  7. Roy says:

Great the drop in sessions were last week, about as much use as these proposed traffic lights. Before any more work other than emergency repairs are considered would it not be a good idea to Finnish all the over running road works which are making life intolerable for the residents of Cheadle and Gatley. Remember crawling traffic with idling engines are not good the HEALTH of the residents and the Environment.
Also when are the pavement repairs going to be final done in Cheadle High Street and the surrounding area?

    • Iain Roberts says:

We did promote the drop-in sessions last week, Roy.

Re: the pavements we have had more repairs done. I don’t suppose there will ever be “final” repairs as heavily-used pavements always degrade over time and need regular repairs.

  8. Alan says:

“Queues will be slightly longer from Cheadle” why do you hate us so much?
No train, crap bus service, no right turn at the A34, Broadway closed off years ago and now longer queues going to Stockport. Utterly ridiculous, I’ll say it again, it ain’t broke, it doesn’t need fixing.

  9. Alan says:

Can we assume that the council is going ahead with this no matter what we think, or will democracy prevail?

The report states that queues will from when the lights are on red but will clear during the cycle. Isn’t that then a complete waste of time and money – clearing a queue that you’ve created?

    • Iain Roberts says:

The idea is to reduce the long queues, make it easier to exit from Heathside Park Road and make the roundabout easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to use. We’ll be interested to see what people think of the proposals.

  10. john says:

If the object is to reduce queue toward Cheadle Heath, all that is required is increase the peak period green light time to allow more through to Cheadle and the motorway. The flow of traffic from Cheadle is acceptable at present in between the gaps in traffic to get on to Roscoes and a queue is only from the AA usually, there is generally no queue off the Motorway slip usually. Why all the expense to achieve the same or create another issue, Stockport Council

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi John – in addition to the aim you mention, there are at least three other issues: safety and ease for cyclists, safety and ease for pedestrians and the problem getting out of Heathside Park Road.

  11. Jane says:

At the very least try temporary traffic lights to see if it works before going the whole hog.

    • Sue Fensome says:

I agree, Jane. But sadly we know from the Gatley/ Kingsway junction, that the powers-that-be don’t like doing the obvious.

  12. S Hurst says:

Cant believe this, totally ludicrus scheme, what is our council thinking! Who pays for long term maintenance and repairs to the Abney and cycle paths? Taxpayers thats who! I say we form a sit-in protest at tge proposed Roscoes, get MEN reports their!

    • Iain Roberts says:

Yes, taxpayers pay for maintenance of our roads, paths and parks. Not sure why that’s an argument for or against though – surely just an obvious fact.

  13. Angela Hurrell says:

I am commenting only know because I have only just been made aware although I live right in top of this. Stockport Council is a disgrace.
So you just let the cat out of the bag. The main reason for this is to relieve the congestion created by over population of the Lloyds Site on Cheadle Hearh Rd.
Why should we pay for this?
Why should our environmemt be detrimentally impacted?
