Gatley trains WORSE than 80 years ago

by Lib Dem team on 16 July, 2018

Northern Rail’s train service to Gatley is, incredibly, WORSE than the service the village had in July 1938 – eighty years ago.

Back in July 1938, according to Bradshaw’s Railway Guide, there were four trains an hour taking passengers into Manchester from Gatley, with the journey taking around 20 minutes (slightly longer for trains that also stopped at Longsight).

“It’s astonishing that 80 years on we actually have a worse service,” said Cllr Iain Roberts.

    Graylings failing. One word, renationalise.

I’m afraid Gatley commuters need to start complaining more vociferously and getting together. Maybe there is something I don’t know about. I was told by a member of Northern staff that the only way things will change us if we have a user group. I’m up for it but I can’t do it alone

The overgrown viaduct across Lobb Ghyll on the Skipton to Ilkley Line in Yorkshire, built by the Midland Railway in 1888 and closed in 1965
The Beeching cuts (also Beeching Axe) were a reduction of route network and restructuring of the railways in Great Britain, according to a plan outlined in two reports, The Reshaping of British Railways (1963) and The Development of the Major Railway Trunk Routes (1965), written by Dr Richard Beeching and published by the British Railways Board.

The first report identified 2,363 stations and 5,000 miles (8,000 km) of railway line for closure, 55% of stations and 30% of route miles, with an objective of stemming the large losses being incurred during a period of increasing competition from road transport and reducing the rail subsidies necessary to keep the network running; the second identified a small number of major routes for significant investment. The 1963 report also recommended some less well-publicised changes, including a switch to containerisation for rail freight. (Courtesy of Wikipedia j

Gatley commuters have my sympathy, but spare a thought for us Cheadle dwellers. No train station. No tram stop. No buses. Mad cyclists on Manchester road, using it as a speedway track instead of using the cycle lane. TfGM?

Where have negotiations got to with regard to re-instating Cheadle’s railway station? This seems to be taking an age.

    Comparing with 1938 is stupid.
    Anyone want compare with 1838?
