Police warning over “Scotland Yard” phone scam

by Lib Dem team on 17 July, 2018

From Greater Manchester Police:

Yesterday we had a report of an elderly lady being conned out of cash by a bogus caller who rang her stating he was from Scotland Yard and that her card had been used fraudulently. He then went on to say he needed her to withdraw cash to fund the investigation. She withdrew £2.4K. Initially he asked her to travel to London with the cash, when she refused he made arrangements to collect it from her home address. Later a female arrived and collected the money.

They tried to get her to hand over more but she refused. This is not the first we have had recently in Stockport, it may well be a GM or nationwide problem, we are looking into it.

This makes me really sad that someone who’s vulnerable appears to have no relatives looking out for her. What a horrible thing to happen, poor woman. Look out for each other people.

I find it hard to conceive of a mindset that allows you to rob a vulnerable older person of what may be their life-savings. There is no place in hell good enough for these crooks.
