Report back from Cheadle Area Committee, 7th August 2018

by Lib Dem team on 7 August, 2018

Cheadle Area Committee was on Tuesday 7th August 2018, starting at 6pm. The venue was Trinity Church, Massie Street, Cheadle.

It was a short meeting, lasting just 30 minutes.

Here’s what was discussed:

  • Lib Dem Cllr Paul Porgess, as Chairman, raised the issue of traveller incursions. We are meeting with council officers on 4th September to look at the issue, and working with residents to see how we can better protect our green spaces from illegal entry.
  • We approved Gatley Village Partnership’s application for £1,000 towards improvements to the war memorial at Gatley Green, including better disabled access. Total cost for the whole project is £7073.42.
  • We approved Cheadle & Gatley Junior Football Club’s application for £1,000 towards balls, equipment and venue hire over the year for girls’ teams (total cost £2,500).
  • There were no planning applications
  • We approved all the yellow line applications to move onto the next stage and be legally advertised.
  • Proposal for double yellow lines at the junction of Wensley Road and Gatley Road, Cheadle. 30 local households had letters consulting them on the proposals. 12 replied, of which 10 (83%) were in favour and 2 against. If we approve it, the plan will be legally advertised before coming back to Area Committee.
  • Proposal for either single or double yellow lines on Milton Cresent around the private road where 13 Milton Crescent is situated. Local residents were a little more split on this one. Of 18 households consulted, 13 replies were received. 9 of those (70%) were in favour , 3 against and one undecided. If a proposal is agreed, it will be legally advertised.
  • Proposal for double yellow lines at the junction of Cherrington Road and Broadway, Cheadle. 88% of residents agreed with this one, and again the next step will be legal advertising.
  • Proposal for extended double yellow lines opposite the entrance to Church Court on Hall Street, Cheadle to help residents manoeuvre in and out of the parking area. Six letters were sent (to the six households on Church Court) with the one person who responded being in favour. Next step is a legal advert if approved.
  • Event application from Edgeley-based Soul Creations for an event around the scout hut in Abney Hall Park on 25th August for an artisan market and community fun day was approved.

Tried to watch it but the sound just cut out and it was just when they were discussing Gatley Village Partnership.

  2. Iain Roberts says:

Sorry about that – our microphones weren’t working properly at various points during the meeting, and the webcast doesn’t pick up the sound if the mics are off.

The situation on Milton (for example) is still bad with cars parked both sides, blocking the pavements and restricting car travel to single lane. Has any asssesment been done in respect of car park capacity in Cheadle?
Are these people just cheapskates, who want to avoid paying for parking? I wonder if Andrew Dawson would be happy if we all parked outside his house??

    • Bruce says:

Alan – what Cheadle needs is for the council to adopt a more consumer-friendly approach for motorists. I would recommend a free parking period of one hour which would then alleviate some of the problems mentioned above.

Whenever I go to Cheadle in the car I NEVER use the car park as I object to paying to park in my local village. Whenever I go to Stockport I park at Tesco which is free for three hours.

Councils and governments have always used the motorist as an easy source of revenue, in other words a ‘cash cow’

  4. Estelle says:

I totally. understand the need for the double yellow lines, and single yellow lines. However we constantly mention supporting local businesses. I suspect that the footfall along Wilmslow Rd between Broadway and the traffic lights at the White Hart has now fallen, which of course is a shame.
As for additional parking; behind the church, there is a row of garages by the green on Hall Street which appear to be derelict. Can this area be taken over by the council for parking?

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Estelle, funny you should mention the garages. We are looking at exactly that issue, and may well be able to put additional parking on that site.

      • S says:

Estelle , Iain with reference to your comments regarding the garages resident do use these to take them away for extra parking would not help in my opinion. The green is used daily for residents and children i feel this would be a safety issues as the road is narrow coming in and out.The residents worked hard to have permit parking why should we have to free up space for parking when you are encouraging people to use public transport and bikes. It’s bad enough when cyclist’s whizz along the road. The road is in a horrible state and floods near the wood yard when it rains this would make the road worse and it would become a mad free for all for parking spaces….

      • John Allwork says:

        Hi Iain
As Chair of Friends of Hall Street Green, please can I be kept in the loop about any plans for the garages and the effect this may have on the Green and extra traffic that may result, especially along Mary Street, the only way in.
        John Allwork

What’s the point of single yellow lines? Brooklyn Cescent has them: No Parking between 8am & 6pm. It’s a car park most the day! No policing. Yet I got a fine for parking in the Loading Only on High Street at 8.30 pm. I had clearly incorrectly assumed that as there were no times shown it would be ok at night. Been parking there since I can remember at night. I’ll try Pizza Express Didsbury next time…..

Any news on the train station? Hope I get a reply this week as Im really curious as to whether or not it is going ahead. The transport system in Cheadle is absolutely disgusting and we really need something else to help people get out of Cheadle, other than by car.

    • Iain Roberts says:

There’s not going to be a go/no-go decision on a railway station right away. I’m afraid rail changes take a lot longer to come in. We’ll continue working on it and update when there’s any news. What we need is to make small steps in the right direction. For example, we want the station to be made a TfGM priority. Then we need costings to be done and business case to be worked up. Then we need the Government to agree to fund it. Then there’ll be detailed design work and a final decision, then hopefully we can get it sorted.

I would love there to be a quicker solution, but that’s not the way things are done in this country.

  7. Sally says:

Don’t believe yellow lines make any difference nobody to police it . Broadway is awful when Kingsway school is open , try going anywhere at 3 pm where cars double park . All yellow lines need to be permanently monitored not on rare occasions !!! Save your money council !! Yellow lines good in theory not in practise

  8. JB says:

Good luck with the railway station re-opening proposal. Keep the pressure up. Who is preparing the case?

  9. Lee says:

Did the yellow lines ever go on wensley road? It’s still not great there.i saw they are up on Milton. Looks like it’s improved the road.
