Graham calls for 2019 to be the year of a Cheadle train station

by Lib Dem team on 20 December, 2018

Graham Greenhalgh and the Lib Dems are calling for 2019 to be the year that Cheadle’s train station is agreed.

“Cheadle’s roads are jammed. It’s not acceptable for us to still not have a train station. If a station is agreed in 2019 there’s no reason why it can’t be up and running by 2025, perhaps even earlier.” Graham said.

With thousands of people working in Cheadle, a station wouldn’t only help local residents to travel to Manchester, Stockport and the Airport. It will also make it easier for people to come into Cheadle to work, and that means fewer cars on our roads and fewer cars parking on our residential streets through the day.

“In January I’ll be launching a new campaign for a station for Cheadle. With enough support from residents and businesses, we can win it.” Graham said.

How will a train on this line get to the airport?

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi John – the proposal is for an interchange at Baguley to switch onto the airport tram line (or a new, more direct airport tram line that’s also being considered). Another possibility is for a Gatley station on the Mid-Cheshire line.

  2. Linda says:

Please can we get the trains we already have running as they used to, before we get more lines that don’t work.

  3. John H says:

Like everything to do with railways the scheme will be “Delayed or Cancelled”.

  4. Jane says:

I wish the railway bridge in GATLEY looked like the one in Cheadle. Ours is depressing & ugly!

For the last few hours there has been what appears to be a baby bird of prey in my garden. It doesn’t appear to be injured but it isn’t moving much. I suspect it must be an escapee as I’ve passed it several times without alarming it.It is mostly brown with flashes of white around face and shoulder, when it raises its wings its back is white, its legs are red. It has a small head for its size.

    I would appreciate any suggestions.

Don’t want to be negative and it would be great to have a Cheadle station, but on the issue of causing less traffic through Cheadle, having a station certainly hasn’t lessened the constant queues of traffic through Gatley at busy times?

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Heather – there are a couple of things. First, Gatley’s always had a station so it’s hard to know what the traffic would be like without it. Since people would still have to get to work, I’d think it would be even worse than it is now.

Second, Cheadle is a far bigger employment centre than Gatley. Thousands of people work in Cheadle and need to get to work one way or another. At the moment most drive because there aren’t many other good alternatives.

All power to your elbow! We’ve waited long enough for this. With existing trains and an existing line, it shouldn’t be too difficult to arrange.

For those who still hanker after a ‘Manchester orbital’ route, don’t forget that alternate trains from Chester could run to Piccadilly and Stalybridge using existing track.

    Keep up the pressure!

  8. Alan says:

A station by 2025? Are you kidding? What’s wrong with the end of 2019? It’s probably the most basic station arrangement imaginable/ one platform, trains already run- no wonder it never happens with that level of aspiration. 2025! God that is incredible – and I don’t mean in a good way- and what have wild birds got to do with station FGS!

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Alan – it would be lovely if we had a system which allowed a station to get funding, go through the full planning and consultation process, have contractors taken on and then built inside 12 months. We don’t. That doesn’t happen anywhere in the UK.

  9. Jennifer says:

Hear, hear, Alan. My thoughts exactly!

  10. Ben says:

It would be amazing for cheadle how do I show support for the campaign?
