Works on M56/M60 in New Year

by Lib Dem team on 27 December, 2018

From Highways England and their contractor:

M56 Sharston Link – Carriageway surfacing works

Highways England is responsible for managing and maintaining the motorway and trunk road network in Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and South Lancashire.

We have recently carried out work to replace the safety barriers on the M56 between junctions 1 and 3a. I’m pleased to inform you that these works are now complete. A number of drainage issues were also resolved at the same time as well as work to upgrade the communication cables.

In the New Year, we propose to start work to resurface the M56 between junctions 1 and 3a. This will take place on both sides of the carriageway as follows:

M56 between junctions 3a and 1 eastbound

  • Surfacing work – from 9 to 15 January 2019
  • Replacement of road markings and traffic sensor cables – from 19 to 24 January 2019

All work will take place between the hours of 9pm and 5am, seven days a week. To facilitate and carry out the works safely, overnight closures will be in place on the M56 between junctions 3a and 1, during the dates and times stated above. M56 between junctions 1 and 3a westbound

  • Surfacing work – from 16 to 18 January and from 25 to 29 January 2019
  • Replacement of road markings and traffic sensor cables – from 30 January to 3 February 2019

All work will take place between the hours of 9pm and 5am, seven days a week. To facilitate and carry out the works safely, overnight closures will be in place on the M56 between junctions 1 and 3a during the dates and times stated above. Full weekend closures

So that we are able to complete this work more quickly and to avoid long-term disruption, we plan to have two full weekend closures in place. This will allow us to carry out necessary deep carriageway repairs as well as a substantial amount of surfacing work. The closures are planned to take place on:

  • Eastbound carriageway – from 9pm on 11 January to 5am on 14 January 2019
  • Westbound carriageway – from 9pm on 25 January to 5am on 28 January 2019

Associated slip road closures will also be required and localised signed diversion routes will be in place. Customers travelling to Manchester Airport are advised to allow extra time for travel.

While we will do our upmost to meet the timeframes stated above, there are factors, such as weather conditions and events that can change the overall programme. Therefore it’s possible that works, including the full weekend closures, could be cancelled at short notice. If you would like to receive the latest information on these works, please follow our twitter feed on @highwaysNWEST.
