Local primaries shine in rankings

by Lib Dem team on 18 January, 2019

The Lib Dem team would like to offer our thanks to the staff, parents and students at the three primary schools in Cheadle & Gatley ward for their success in moving up the rankings in the last two years.

Gatley Primary is now ranked as the best primary school in Greater Manchester and the 43rd best in the whole country – a status reflected by its long waiting list: the school is working hard to look for ways to take on more pupils.

Cheadle Primary has jumped 3,328 places in the national rankings, to be at 3,873 out of 14,749 schools. It’s moved from three stars to four (from a maximum of five) since 2016.

And most impressive is Lum Head, which in just two years has gone from a one star school to a four star school, and jumped a massive 8,325 places in the national rankings. Lum Head is now ranked 4,587 out of 14,749 nationally and further improvements are surely on the way.

Importantly, parents know that they can send their children to any of the local schools and be confident they’ll get a top-quality education.

You can find more information on the all Greater Manchester primary schools at the MEN.

  1. Bruce says:

A couple of years back the council allowed the building of around 27 new homes on the old Ferranti site in Gatley, which is probably around 300 metres from Gatley primary.

As catchment areas are now based on the distance from the school this means that these new homes are going to get priority over , say Delamere or Springfield, so anyone with a young child living around there, or a similar distance, is going to be disappointed.

Potentially this new estate could fill a whole class!

I already know of someone who has bought a house there for that very reason.

  2. Iain Roberts says:

Yes, there are more homes being built which will put pressure on local schools. That’s always been the way, and as throughout history we’ll have to deal with it.

Gatley has approximately 4000 homes, and between Lum Head and Gatley Primary has 3 form entry at Primary school. So the actual number of new homes needed to fill a primary school class is nearer to 1,000 than 27.

  3. Bruce says:

I am referring to Gatley and your figures are based on a normal distribution but this is new build of family properties so your statistic is flawed. I go back to my original example -potentially they could fill a whole reception class.

  4. John H says:

Not far from the potential massive development on Gatley Golf Course.
Any new information on Peel Holdings intentions?
