Lib Dem £100m works continue with resurfacing of Old Hall, Lyndene, Mardale and Braystan

by Lib Dem team on 5 March, 2019

The Lib Dem £100m scheme to resurface all the bad roads and pavements across Stockport is working its way across Cheadle and Gatley. A lot of our pavements have already been repaired, and now more roads are being fixed too. Here’s the notice from the council about three roads on the South Park Road Estate being resurfaced:

Stockport Council is undertaking a programme of repairs across the borough as part of our ‘Investing in Stockport’ initiative. One of the key themes of the initiative is investing in Stockport’s economic growth and regeneration to create more opportunities for local residents.

As part of this work, Stockport Council has committed to invest £100m to improve roads and footpaths across the borough over a nine year delivery period. This funding will be used to carry out a range of repairs from patching to resurfacing in targeted areas which will provide a long term solution to the deterioration on the highway network. For more information visit:

As part of the programme, Stockport Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works on Old Hall Road/Lyndene Gardens/Braystan Gardens/Mardale Drive, Gatley. This work will be carried out by our alliance partner Colas Ltd. The extents of the works and the dates are as per below:

All schemes should take up to 1 week to complete, except Old Hall Road which should just take the weekend, weather permitting.

Unfortunately, it will be necessary to restrict traffic movement whilst the carriageway resurfacing takes place utilising a road closure with a signed diversion in place where applicable. Access to properties in the working area will be maintained where possible however may be restricted for certain periods as the work progresses. Residents and businesses directly affected will receive a letter explaining the scope of the work and timescales involved in due course. Although some local disruption is inevitable this will be kept to a minimum by our staff on site.

I believe you mean the Labour (council) or Tory (government) Scheme.

    • Iain Roberts says:

No Bruce, I don’t mean either of these things. As I’ve explained it several times before, I would suggest that anyone who still wants to understand why this is a Lib Dem scheme looks back at one of those explanations.

    • Graham Greenhalgh says:

      Hello Bruce

The HIP started in 2014 although planning took place earlier. The scoping for the £100m investment over nine years included costing, safety improvements and social benefits. All this work was undertaken by the then Lib Dem executive. Labour’s contribution thus far has been to not cancel HIP as all the expectations have come to fruition. To date we have seen a noticeable reduction in claims of £1.1m more importantly this is a measure of reduced injury and damage for the people of Stockport.

  2. Jerry says:

What about Lower Kingsway? It’s in a disgusting dilapidated condition, having been badly damaged by contractor’s plant during the construction of ‘South Park Mews’ several years ago.

  3. Graham Coull says:

Hi Ian, Do you know when Coniston and South Park will be
    done.

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Graham – we don’t have any further dates at the moment, but we’ll let people know as soon as we do. There are a lot of roads that need doing across the whole of Cheadle & Gatley.

  4. Jerry says:

What about Lower Kingsway? That is in a dreadfull state.
It was severely damaged by contractor’s plant during the construction of ‘South Park Mews’ several years ago and never reinstated.

Since the traffic regulations ceased to be enforced several years ago, Lower Kingsway is now regarded as part of the motorway network!

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Jerry – we agree. There are many, many roads that need to be repaired. Hopefully all the bad ones will be done, and any that the council misses out we’ll be chasing them up on.

  5. Roy says:

    Hi Iain
I think it is very courageous of you to take responsibility for these so called pavement improvements given the extremely poor workmanship of the chosen contractor, Brucklyn Avenue Cheadle was chosen to have its good pavement recovered unfortunately the contractor failed to sweep the pavement before applying the new surface as a result within 3 weeks grass started to grow through the new surface there are now puddles in the footpath where before there were none. This was reported to the Council 3 weeks after the work had been, You will surprised to hear that no rectification work has taken place and yet the contractors are still being given more work.
When will this Madness Stop? We want value for money.

  6. Robert Cohen says:

Sorry. Waste of money. If the surfacing is to take a day, it will be a skim that will fail – are these the same contractors that did pavements in cheadle?

Lower Kingsway is not only poor, but dangerous in places. It’s not designed to take the traffic it does. I counted 22 cars coming through this morning on the time it took to walk from Brayston to the underpass. All came through and exited north bound on kingsway. What does “Access Only” actually mean. The signage is inadequate and the 20mph may as well be 50!

  7. Carol Greene says:

Good news- some of the potholes on Cambridge Road have been filled.
Bad news – so badly done already breaking up!

    • Iain Roberts says:

Absolutly Carol – that’s why the resurfacing is so important (and why Cambridge Road needs to be done too). Properly resurfacing the road will fix it, just patching it won’t do the job.

  8. Janet holmes says:

When will Warren Avenue be repaired?
Not sure who prioritises the order, but I have noted some having been done which were not as much in need as Warren. How many pavements have 5 strips of repaired surface….? No doubt somewhere will!
Perhaps we’ve been bypassed because the road surface is also desperately I need of repair…..what a relief there was no red spots applied to the residential areas where work is intended……

  9. Hi Graham,

As others have said, what logic is there in resurfacing cul-de-sacs (significant less volume of traffic as one would expect) on the South Park Road Estate before resurfacing the significantly worse road surfaces (many years now) along aerial routes of South Park Road and Coniston Road? Does not make sense!

  10. Iain Roberts says:

Hi David – as local councillors we’re not involved in the scheduling. We’re looking for all the work to be done in a sensible timeframe. The busier roads need more traffic management and are more complex to repair, so I suspect that they try to do a mix of busier and quieter roads at any one time.

The main thing is to get everything done.

  11. s says:

when will Earnest Street, Hall Street and Church Street be done, or we could make this a new Olympic sport dodge the pot holes!!!.
The Pavements are in a terrible state my poor mum has fallen too many times enough is enough what do we pay our council tax for….
