Dow coming to Cheadle Royal

by Lib Dem team on 12 April, 2019

Construction on a new unit at Cheadle Royal Business Park starts in the summer, it has been announced.

Materials science company Dow will have its UK headquarters, along with sales, technical and R&D, based on the business park. More information can be found here.

“Cheadle is a great place to live and work, and we welcome another national headquarters opening here, bringing more jobs and money into the area, ” said Cllr Graham Greenhalgh. “However, we also know that this is likely to add to traffic and parking problems. It makes transport improvements around Cheadle and Gatley even more important.”

“The Liberal Democrat campaign for a rail service to Cheadle, for improved bus links and to sort out the Kingsway junction is more urgent than ever. If re-elected on May 2, I will continue to work to get transport sorted in Gatley and Cheadle,” Graham said.

I would consider sorting out the Cheadle RoyAk junction with traffic lights would be s priority to stop the roundabouts being stitched up would be important as well

  2. Roy says:

More jobs great news but what about the increase in traffic, what improvements are to made to access this site and where is the closest public transport.
We can’t keep adding to congestion, we need improvements before development.

Everybody keeps mentioning that a train station at Cheadle will solve all the traffic problems – it wont! It will make scant difference.
People prefer cars because it is quicker from door to door.

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Bruce – the evidence suggests otherwise. In places with good public transport – especially good rail links – people own fewer cars, drive less and house prices go up too. That’s why far fewer people own cars in central London, despite being richer.

      • Bruce says:

Iain – you are talking about elsewhere – I am talking about Cheadle and the specific location for any station. Anyone who works in Cheadle Royal will not get a train and then walk to their place of employment. And don’t forget all the extra traffic around Cheadle – like taxis and the like.

        Cheadle is not London.

        • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Bruce – thousands of people work in Cheadle village within an easy walk of a train station. Those people currently drive because there’s no good alternative, then many of them park on residential roads. A Cheadle station would see at least some of them come by train instead, which would make a massive difference.

Time for a congestion charge that will slow them down a bit!!

Who on earth gave planning permission for that to be built at Cheadle Royal? That roundabout exit from the business park onto the A34 is already a nightmare! Thanks SMBC!

  6. Estelle Weiner says:

If it’s new-build I would have thought they had to provide parking on site in their planning application??

The lack of buses from Cheadle Royal to Cheadle or Manchester is a dire situation. One an hour, on weekdays, just is pathetic. And nothing straight down Kingsway.

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Estelle. There should be parking on-site, and hopefully it will be sufficient – we shall see.

      • CT says:

Re your reply to Estelle – do you mean parking on St Anne’s Road and Silverdale Road? You supported parking on these roads when it was first disputed, and when people objected to it your argument was that you needed to support businesses and jobs. I assume, therefore, that your views are the same and the inevitable extra cars will park on residential roads? What’s your stance on this?

  7. If a station was available where would you park, not enough room now for Gatley alone. And residents moan about street parking ?

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi David – thousands of people work in Cheadle and most of them have to drive at the moment. A lot of the parking problems we experience are down to workers’ cars. If just some of them came in by train instead it would make a massive difference.

  8. JB says:

    Hello Iain,
. We are all looking forward to the reconstruction of a railway station in Cheadle. What is the latest situation on this long running requirement? What is holding up the project?

Also, when are we likely to see the return of a bus service to Styal Road between Heald Green and Gatley? This omission leads to more local car journeys and clogging up of Cheadle car parks.
