Cycling and walking scheme consultation opens

by Lib Dem team on 11 October, 2019

Stockport Council is consulting on a number of cycling and walking schemes around the borough, though none is in Cheadle and Gatley.

The consultation on the cycling and walking proposals are open for  on a fairly short time window until Nov 4th.  The consultation can be found here.

There are eight schemes being consulted on, including in Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme and The Heatons.

Cllr Iain Roberts said “It’s essential that the council invests in transport, and in helping people get around safely, conveniently and with as little pollution as possible. Cars will be important for a long time to come, but we also need to boost public transport, walking and cycling.”

Wow, walking and cycling. Priority stuff. How about Stockport council ‘consult’ on a desperately needed public transport scheme for Cheadle? Specifically a tram/train.

And then they could maybe ‘consult’ on the slow grinding death of Cheadle high street. And perhaps make a constructive decision to lower parking costs and business rates as a matter of urgency and try to lobby some decent companies to open up here.

    Just an idea.

Couldn’t agree more Adam, and that’s from a cyclist and hiker. Need to prioritise saving Cheadle high street

  2. Bruce says:

Anyone willing to contribute should first visit Warren Avenue in Cheadle and look at the cycle route which the Lib Dems squandered our hard earned cash on.

Should be in any ‘how not to ‘ manual.

    • Andrew Ashworth says:

Spot on Bruce, I am a cyclist who tries to keep off the busy roads as much as possible, but many of the routes and cycle paths just don’t work. If they don’t work, such as Warren Avenue, cyclists simply won’t use them.

    Bruce
I totally agree with total waste of money.
We need representing by politicians who can start spending our money as if it was theirs, then would start to get value for our money and sensible public works

There should not be any valid conversation until Stockport agree to mend urgently the rocking pavements in the high traffic areas which are a disgrace and a real hazard to the elderly and disabled. Pot holes on the pavement on Ashfield road a death trap and this suggested consultation just shows how Stockport treat the council tax payers with contempt

    • John H says:

Why do the authorities ignore the obstructions caused by “A” frame advertising boards on the High Street and Wilmslow Road?

  5. Janet Holmes says:

I support the comments from Bruce. The pavements of Warren Avenue are made up of five strips of crumbling Tarmac (of various sorts), certainly not a safe walking option.
Over years I have seen perfectly sound paths replaced (viz.
Kingsway ) and still we wait. I acknowledge along with others….remind me, who pays the highest taxes in the area!!

  6. Alan says:

And just how much is Roscoes costing? It’s never ending. Just when I think they’ve done they start somewhere else! I hope it will be policed so that any cyclists not using it will be booked.

    • Iain Roberts says:

Booking cyclists for legally using public roads would be an interesting take on the law! No, it’s about getting more people cycling by providing better, safer, direct routes.
