Jo Swinson’s Plan for a Brighter Future

by Lib Dem team on 6 November, 2019

Jo Swinson has launched the Liberal Democrats’ Plan for a Brighter Future. Jo will start her nationwide tour today and details of the plan will be delivered to millions of people across the UK by mail and online.

The plan outlines the party’s key priority – to Stop Brexit – and sets out a bold vision on how to build a fairer, brighter future for the country. It is a plan to tackle inequalities, confront the climate emergency and give everyone the opportunities they need to succeed.

The old politics has failed. For too many people, working hard and playing by the rules is not enough to guarantee a happy, fulfilling and secure life for them and their children.

A Liberal Democrat government will create a shared vision for the country we want to be, where every single person and community is valued, empowered and cared for, and where we protect our planet for future generations.

A Liberal Democrat government will revoke Article 50 on day one, work to keep our family of nations together and build a brighter future.

The Liberal Democrat Plan for a Brighter Future

1.     Stop Brexit and invest the £50 billion Remain Bonus in public services and tackling inequality.

2.     Tackle the climate emergency by generating 80% of our electricity from renewables by 2030 and insulating all low-income homes by 2025.

3.     Give every child the best start in life by recruiting 20,000 more teachers as part of an extra £10 billion a year for schools.

4.     Build a fairer economy by providing free childcare from 9 months and giving every adult £10,000 to spend on skills and training throughout their lives.

5.     Transform our mental health services by treating mental health with the same urgency as physical health.

Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson said:

“Today I am proud to set out the Liberal Democrats’ bold and ambitious plan to build a brighter future.

“Too many people – people who work hard and play by the rules – are struggling just to get by. Our country is crying out for a new kind of leadership and the Liberal Democrats are rising to this challenge.

“Our plan to build a brighter future starts with stopping Brexit, generating a £50 billion Remain Bonus that will benefit every part of the United Kingdom, but it doesn’t stop there.

“It is a plan to transform the mental health services that are so integral to our wellbeing. It is a plan to give every child the best start in life, providing the resources to recruit thousands more teachers and funding free childcare from nine months. It is a plan that will tackle the climate emergency, to make sure the planet we live on is protected for future generations.

“This is a plan to stop Brexit and build a brighter future. As leader of the Liberal Democrats, I am thrilled to be sharing our vision with people living and working right across our family of nations.”

And only today, the Prime Minister is saying what a good thing it is for Northern Ireland that, under his deal, it will remain part of the single market and free movement arrangements.

Well, let’s be blunt here, Boris. If it’s good for the Northern Ireland (and it is), then it would good for the rest of us in the UK.

Isn’t she the person who a few years back stood up in parliament and railed against the undemocratic EU and said we should hold an in/out referendum?

Isn’t she the person who a few months back wanted to ditch mandatory sentences for carrying knives?

Who advocated ‘ending the use of prison for women, except for the most serious and violent crimes’?

    Who called the English racist?.

    • John Hartley says:

Bruce – and exactly what’s wrong with “‘ending the use of prison for women, except for the most serious and violent crimes’?”

We already imprison a greater percentage of our population than m/any other European countries. Keeping prison for the most serious and violent offenders, of whichever gender, is a good idea for society. I have been retired for a goodly number of years now but my recollections from working in the criminal justice system is that women offenders were, proportionately, much more likely to receive custodial sentences than men, for relatvely minor offences. There was, and I imagine still is, “institutionalised misogny” within the sentencing system. It’s plain wrong and generally bad for society.

  3. Deborah Brogan says:

What are you doing for those who have not got children, tried to save up all their lives but been on a low income and cannot afford to retire?

    • John H says:

We are in a group of hard working people who had to provide for our selves all our lives without the assistance of any benefits. A category that is never considered as needing financial consideration.
With the list of fantasy’s published by the Liberals (I carefully omitted the word Democrats) our category of voter will not be giving support at the ballot box.

  4. Jane says:

Definition of democracy. 1a : government by the people especially : rule of the majority. b : a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly

    #stopbrexit?

    • Alan says:

      Jane
Brexit wasn’t decided by a majority since not everyone voted

      • John H says:

When was the last vote national or local with100% turn out?
Those that could be bothered won the day.
Do you want vote again and again until you get the result you want?

  5. David Johnson says:

The first referendum on EU Membership was clear in my memory to be governed by Fake News where the real costs & benefits were ignored and emotional shouts ruled reporting. Since then more realistic evaluation has been widely reported. That is why it is imperative that the voters are given the chance to vote again – even if it means staying in the EU for a while longer to reassess the situation before another referendum.

  6. Amber says:

    Jo Swinsons Voting Record. Please can we have reasons why;

    Voted
    for the Bedroom Tax
for reducing benefits for the ill and disabled
    For tripling tuition fees
For the privatisation of the post office
    For a no deal Brexit
    For culling badgers

    Against reducing bankers bonus tax
    Against mansion tax
    Against slowing of rail fares
    Against the regulation of fracking
