5G phone mast applications refused

by Lib Dem team on 7 September, 2020

The Council has turned down two planning applications for 5G phone masts. The planning applications were for masts twice as high as a house on Stonepail Road and on Kingsway in front of the bowling green and sports club.

A third application for a mast on top of the telephone exchange on Cheadle High Street was approved.

The Lib Dem team have welcomed the news.

“We support 5G masts to give local people access to high speed mobile internet, but these were too big and in the wrong places,” said Cllr Iain Roberts. “The telecoms company appear to have just tried to install the largest mast wherever was easiest for them. With just a little more thought we can have 5G using masts in more sensible locations.”

We are waiting to see what the applicant does next. They could appeal against the refusal, submit revised plans for the same locations (e.g. with smaller masts) or propose a new location.

Surely masts have to be higher than the surrounding buildings to be effective? That’s why they are on the tops of hills, churches and tall buildings. So why put them on residential streets? Or am I missing something?
