The new Gatley Co-op opens on Friday 27th November 2020. We spoke to the regional people and, with the fit-out well underway, it looks like they’ll be able to hit that date. Ten days to go!

Good news for those of us who live at this end of Gatley.
By the by, is another business already lined up to move into the existing co-op premises?
Not heard anything about the existing unit, John.
Its great to see the new development come to life and this whole area regenerated. Could I request that we plant a couple of trees near the parking bays and have these lit in the evening. This would really lift the area and get everyone into the festive mood.
When we moved to Gatley in 1970 Tesco had a store where the current Co-op is. I think it closed in the early seventies when Tesco changed their business model.
Bruce – and before that, my recollection is that the Co-op was in the building now partially occupied by Armenique.
I’ve never really known why Gatley used to have two Co-op shops – the one where it currently is and the one now occupied by the “cheap shop”. I can only guess that they used to be owned by different Co-operative Societies and Gatley was on the border of their trading areas. I briefly worked for the Co-operative Wholesale Society in the early 1980s and the patchwork of often small, independent Societies was at times a logistical nightmare.
