Broadway flower bed

by Lib Dem team on 2 July, 2021

A number of people have raised the sorry state of the flower bed in the centre of Broadway, near the junction with Cheadle Road.

The Council is refusing to do any more than cut the plants back from time to time, citing budget issues (money for ongoing maintenance is tight, and harder to find that money for new construction which can often be got from government grant).

The Council is happy for local residents to maintain the bed, so if anyone is interested in helping do that please get in touch.

The council cut down all the hostas just as they were coming into flower! I think a team of Broadway residents could do better than that.

Iain, there are some power cables running along the island under the soil so some care will be required if digging takes place. Would the council have any drawings to show their location?

I grew up in a council house. All the dads mowed the grass strips in front of their rented property, weeded the front, and even took turns to maintain joint planted areas. They were never going to own the house but cared for the place where they lived. That is what is missing now. The general attitude is that someone else (the council) will do it. Well the time has come when they won’t. Don’t just shut your gate on it. Cheadle Civic Society lease and maintain Cheadle Green. SMBC could not keep it to the standard that the Society does. There only has to be a few volunteers to look after the area where they live.

I think this project has the civic society’s name written all over it. Will the council provide the plants and Health and safety provision for it ? If not the council should be made to do it.

Happy to help but not by myself

i could help but need some strong people to dig out the weeds and somewhere to dispose of them.
Also some way to make sure that vehicles, many of which still speed down Broadway, don’t impede or knock down gardeners.
By the way, it’s frustrating to see the attention paid to cutting grass off the kerbs and weeding the bottom of the kerbs in Brookfield Park as a higher priority. Another department?

Happy to help with the digging ect but would need someone who knows what they are doing.
