Better buses for Greater Manchester

by Lib Dem team on 8 October, 2019

For years the Liberal Democrats have been campaigning for Greater Manchester to take control of its bus network. Finally, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority have announced a public consultation to do just that – great news!

The Lib Dem team are supporting the Better Buses for Greater Manchester campaign and their petition calling for regulated buses.

“For years we’ve seen bus routes being lost, prices going up and passenger numbers going down,” said Cllr Keith Holloway. “Instead of the mess of different bus companies deciding their own routes and refusing to accept each others’ tickets, we need a sensible regulated bus network like they have in London and other major cities around the world.”

I visit London quite often visiting family and always use the bus service when I am there – I have a bus pass which I can use although not on the underground

    Without doubt a great system.

I thoroughly agree with the urgent need to improve public transport in Greater Manchester. However I am appalled by the length of time that has been suggested as necessary to implement the changes. Over 3 years for some areas is far too long. This is a regional emergency and any competent organisation should be able to plan and implement changes within 3 months. Contrast this with the speed with which cuts have been implemented on several occasions. The proposed transport improvements look as they are designed to placate the ignorant peasants and prevent violent protests. We want improvements now! It might not be possible to make all desirable improvements at once but a rolling programme of changes could be introduced rapidly with further fine tuning to rub the rough edges off the new scheme.

        Well said.

Stuart chances are the bus companies will object in court. It can’t just be implemented overnight (unfortunately) but let’s not forget that this is Thatchers doing. She deregulated all bus services APART FROM LONDON. We’ve been living with it ever since. It’s now thanks to Andy Burnham and the ruling Labour council in Manchester that have implemented this regulation process

We have bus stops down Styal Road but no bus service!

We have trains that run through Cheadle but no means of boarding them!

    Change is certainly required!
