Styal Road resurfacing

by Lib Dem team on 2 June, 2020

We have received notification from the Council that part of Styal Road (between numbers 84 and 147 – just south of Hollyhedge Road down to Pymgate Lodge/Yew Tree Grove) is being resurfaced. The work will be done outside peak hours, with either traffic control or diversions in place.

It is planned to start on 9th June 2020 and last for up to two weeks.

Here’s what the Council says:

Stockport Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing work along a section of Styal Road, Gatley, located between house numbers 84 to 147. This work will be carried out by our Alliance Partner Tarmac Ltd. The work has been scheduled to commence on Tuesday 9th June, whilst the route is a lot quieter than normal, working hours have been slightly extended and will be between 09:00hrs and 16:00hrs, weather dependant and subject to permit approval from TfGM and the Council’s Streetworks Permit Team.

Unfortunately, to carry out this work it will be necessary to manage traffic movements by utilising a temporary road closure during the above working hours, this is to minimise disruption and allow safe working operations to take place. Information boards will also be erected on site and at other key points in the surrounding area advising road users of the planned work.  Access to properties in the working area will be maintained where possible however it may be restricted for certain periods as the work progresses. Local (signed) diversion routes will be in operation via Hollyhedge Road/Brownley Road/Simonsway or alternatively via Finney Lane/Wilmslow Road/A34/Gatley Road/Altrincham Road/Park Road.

Is this not the ideal opportunity to put double white lines down the centre of the road to make it safer from overtaking speeders?

  2. Dear Iain,

We’ve lived on Nansen Rd 35 years and the footpath on Nansen Road has never been touched apart from a few odd patches now and again. We had hopes it was our time when the West Drive was re-surfaced last year so can you please answer why did it stop there?

Many residents from further along Styal Road and the roads off it use it as a safer route to walk to the village as that section of Styal Road is not only dangerous with speeding traffic, which is the subject of a petition, but the path is only 1m wide and parts are narrowed further with overgrown vegetation.

Can you please advise why it was not done when the opportunity was there.

Also, could I request you to please press for this long, long overdue resurfacing and try to get an idea of when it will be done.

    Thank You
    Neville

Hi Neville, I can’t answer that I’m afraid – I’m not party to those discussions. Hopefully Nansen will be done in the near future, but we don’t have a date yet.

Further to driving down styal road yesterday, I am surprised to find a patch work of repairs not a resurfacing as published – the road will be back to pot hole city by this time next year – why not do it properly first time – it will cost more with constant patching

Who ever does tendering at the council doesn’t know what they are doing when it comes to highways!

Hmm..lived onstyal road for 50yrs, oe of the contractors could not understand why they were not ripping up the whole thing, he said it wont last 18 months because it will not cope with all the large lorries and trucks and is simply to narrow to facilitate this type of traffic.
