Ockleston Memorial slowly moves back to Cheadle Green

by Lib Dem team on 17 October, 2017

The Lib Dem councillors would like to thank Cheadle Civic Society for the latest fantastic piece of work – moving the historic Ockleston Memorial back to Cheadle Green.

For many years it’s been tucked away on Queens’ Gardens. The move to bring it back to Cheadle Green has not been easy and has been undertaken by the Civic Society.

It’s not completed yet, but it’s not too far away from being done so watch this space.

More information on the Ockleston Memorial.

Another big thumbs up from me to Cheadle Civic Society for moving the Ockleston memorial neat to its original home.
The workmen have done a brilliant job so far and I’m very much looking forward to seeing it all lit up!

This is great news. As close to its original position as possible. I remember my Nan telling me when I was little how the horses uses to drink from it. Fabulous stuff. I shall be there with my camera for its unveiling.

the monument will look fantastic in its new location and its appearance will be enhanced by the well kept green surrounding it, I on behalf of the residents would like to thank the person responsible for its upkeep his efforts have not gone unnoticed.

    • Thanks for your positive comments Roy. I am Chair of CCS, and my team have worked for 5 years to renovate Cheadle Green to what it is now-and the restoring of the Ockleston Memorial to a place close to the original site. We have raised funds for this, and maintain the Green. The whole project will be finalized by the Memorial (should be completed next week). From a personal view, after 30 years a CCS committee member, I am proud to have been involved fully in this venture, and see it as a legacy I will leave to Cheadle residents.

One of the engineers told me that they had placed a number of £2 coins underneath the monument. Also noticed the names written into the cement around the bottom. Somebody will find those names in the future and wonder who they were. Hopefully their pictures will be archived by the Civic Society.
