Iain’s Council Motion calls for Police 101 Action

by Lib Dem team on 20 October, 2017

Stockport Liberal Democrats will call for action to make it easier to report non-emergency crimes in a motion at Stockport Full Council on Thursday. If passed, the motion will see Stockport Council writing to Mayor Andy Burnham, who is responsible for policing in Greater Manchester, calling for a review into how the system can be improved.

Cllr Iain Roberts, proposing the motion, said “Every week I am contacted by residents who have witnessed crimes or even been the victim of crime, but have not been able to report it. In 2017 it can’t be right that our only option for reporting non-emergency crimes is to call 101 and wait on the phone – sometimes for an hour or more. As the person in charge of Greater Manchester Police, Andy Burnham needs to get a grip on this.”

Greater Manchester Police’s own figures show that 23% of 101 calls were abandoned in June of this year, up from 17% in May.

Cllr Mark Weldon, who is seconding the motion, said “Every call that the Police are unable to answer is a crime that goes unreported and intelligence that the Police miss out on.”

This drastic fall in service is as a result of “call centre culture” The police service must admit that the “call centre” fails the public not only in reporting crimes but also in potential vital information.
Can you remember when you calls were answered by your local police station by a policeman with knowledge of your local area? That was service!

This is just the tip of a huge iceberg, the police are vastly under resourced and responding to crime if they can, where are the patrols, when did you last see an office on patrol, when did you last see a antisocial behaviour stopped by patrol, recently in an Italian city ,turned the corner and 4 police on walking patrol armed with automatic weapons no crime, I feel the public in general do not feel safe, please support any action that can improve policing

Used 101 recently to report an item found outside our house. Was told to take to the police station. On arrival, the receptionist said they no longer take reports on found or lost property and suggested I put it on Facebook! GMP no longer have the time or resource to deal. I asked what do I do if I find a purse with £1000 in on the way home. Did not get a reply.

If one did take the money to the police station what would happen to it – guess they would have handled that!

Please stop bashing police staff as they are doing a difficult job that we are not prepared to do. Instead blame the Government cuts year on year for decades, not just Conservatives but also all the other parties. I guess all the moaners know that 101 calls are answered by the same people who have to answer 999 which have to take preference. Let’s face it if a person is so concerned with reporting a crime they would be prepared to wait of keep on trying. I bet if it was a broadband problem or a mobile phone problem they would hold or keep trying.
