Lib Dems sweep the board, winning seats from Labour, Tories and UKIP

by Lib Dem team on 1 December, 2017

There were four local council by-elections across the country this week – with Labour, Tories, UKIP and Lib Dems defending.

The Lib Dems won all four, including a huge 54% swing against Labour in Gosport!

Iain said “To rack up such impressive victories against the other main parties shows the Lib Dems are back in business.”

Good to see that UKIP continues to have been destroyed as a party of any relevence.

Just by the by, the Maidstone figures don’t seem to add up. You have Lib Dems & Labour up a total of 28%, yet the Tories & Greens are only down 8.1%. Am I missing something in the maths?

Ta for the explanation. Further confirms my first sentence.

What on earth has this to do with Gatley and Cheadle?

Since the Lib Dem’s are for remaining, maybe some of the electorate are now raalising Brexit isn’t going to be so easy after all…….

Brexit should be abandoned on the basis that we were lied to. It’s the political equivalent of ppi.

      Hah!

I voted to leave and since then the government has gone downhill – rapidly. Had the EU relaxed the immigration rules the vote would have been no.
However – the alternative to the current government is comrade Corbyn. Had they a less left wing leader they would easily win the next election- which they may still do.

Much as the Daily Mail would like you to think otherwise, the issue of immigration is of our government’s making rather than EU rules.

Firstly, the last Labour government did not put a ban on immigration from Bulgaria and Romania when those countries joined the EU. Most other member states did introduce controls. It’s hardly surprising that, in those circumstances, Bulgarians and Romanians came to the UK.

Secondly, and more importantly, there is simply not an blanket right to move to another country. Yes, there is a right to enter another country to look for work (and I think that is right) but there is no automatic right to stay. Other countries have implemented EU rules about this. If you look at the situation in Belgium, they have long had rules, perfectly acceptable under EU legislation, which require EU immigrants to register at their local town hall while they seek work but they have to go home if they do not find work. The UK could easily have done similar but chose not to.

So, two measures which would have had a very significant effect on EU immigration to the UK but both ignored by Labour and Conservative governments. We should be pointing the finger at them, not the EU.

Good one, Alan. Thumbs up from me.
