High Grove Road: Lib Dems ask for chicane and speed sign

by Lib Dem team on 17 January, 2018

Following the recent survey of residents on High Grove Road, Milton Crescent, Chadvil Drive and round the corner on Gatley Road, the Lib Dem team have asked council officers to draw up plans for a chicane on High Grove Road and for a flashing speed sign.

We asked residents and those were the two options that had majority support.

Of the others:

  • Road humps were opposed by a majority of residents
  • While a majority on High Grove Road supported making the junction with Gatley Road one-way, most people on Milton and Chadvil opposed it. It also wouldn’t stop the speeding issue.
  • The idea of blocking off the junction with High Grove and Milton or the junction with High Grove and Broadway was also suggested. We’re looking into this, but we think it might cause more problems by making people take detours through the village centre.

We’ll report back when council officers have developed the plans.

From our house on Gatley Road we can see the High Grove junction. There appears to be an increasing number of vehicles (which include frequent number of John Lewis lorries) that come through Gatley and instead of turning right at the A34 junction they continue across the A34 turn right into High Grove Road left into Broadway and then onto the A34. A no right turn into High Grove Road would significantly reduce traffic volume along it. That said the views of High Grove Road residents must prevail.

  2. Jean Skitt says:

Don’t know what the answer is but the narrow entrance /exit from Highgrove onto Gatley td is a nightmare

  3. June Westley says:

    Blocking Highgrove/ Milton or Broadway
is bound to cause more problems and congestion on Wilmslow Rd and in the village .

    • Jeff says:

I, like many others, regularly cross the A34 and turn right into High Grove rather than queue at the lights. If we could no longer do that the queues would be so long all traffic from Gatley would be stuck behind right turners. Utter chaos!
So until we get a right turn filter best to keep things as they are.

  4. Roy says:

Sorry Jeff but your impatience causes misery for others you are using High Grove as a rat run , how would you like that past your house, if you don’t want to wait go up Style Road or better still use Public Transport , cycle or even walk

  5. Peter Rowley says:

I completely agree with Roy in that rather than wait at the lights some of the people who have commented above take the selfish approach and make life miserable for others. Words fail me.

I am a High Grove resident and say don’t waste the money on chicanes and signs. It won’t make any difference!

Close off the end of the road that joins Broadway all together and stop High Grove from being a cut through.

There is a school on the road for Pete’s sake and it is only a matter of time before a child is killed and I don’t want it to be mine!

    • Jeff says:

When I use High Grove I always respect the 20 limit and drive very carefully. And every vehicle that does this may indeed be saving time for themselves but also they are reducing the delays in the queues they are avoiding so many others benefit too. I think sorting the lights out is the real answer. Obviously reduced car use would be an even better solution but unfortunately thats not likely in the short term.

Unless your speed flashing light is taking images of vehicles and forwarding a fine through the post it will be a pointless exercise..I think they call this a speed camera.

The Gatley right turn filter would be great for all your Gatley residents…. but if it’s good enough for Gatley residents then here’s a though… do it for Cheadle residents too and drop a right turn filter on the Cheadle side… we’ve only been asking for this for years!! Or we can just watch on with the near misses or view the remains of the vehicles that have sadly collided…

Blocking the Milton Crescent or top end of High Grove would make all the residents on these roads very happy ( me included) as we don’t have to endure the half wit motorists that believe this is the place to display their 0-60 abilities… and gain a full 5 minutes on their journey making their unnecessary short cut!! Running the risk of hundreds on school children that use this tree lined road to crossover simply to get to their education. I agree with your other posts it will take some serious injury or similar before anyone actually does something productive… my daughter often describe near miss incidents with fellow school children on this stretch of road….

      Hi Milton resident,

      Happy to answer your points:

      – flashing speed signs do work. They aren’t perfect, but nor are speed cameras, but we’ve used them effectively to slow down traffic and reduce accidents.

      – we would love to find a way to create a right filter from Cheadle or from Gatley. TfGM control the junction and both they and the Highways Agency have ruled out a right filter from either side as they believe it would cause more queues at the junction and may be a safety issue. We are working to find ways to improve the traffic at the junction, but simply putting in a right-filter isn’t likely to succeed.

      – we think that blocking off roads will cause more problems than it solves, by moving the problem around and making people take longer journeys, but we’ll keep an open mind if there are options that work.

  8. Andrew Green says:

Please don’t go with the chicane option; the St Anne’s Road North lunacy should be enough to convince anyone. The chicanes only serve up gridlock at busy periods, generate potholes at the pinch points, and have resulted in frustration and resultant appalling road manners from those who will speed normally. Humps and chicanes do not work
