Labour still planning Cheadle car park price hike

Labour are pushing ahead with plans to hike the car parking fees in Cheadle’s car parks, despite the Federation of Small Businesses branding the plan “damaging and unlawful”.

The Liberal Democrats have committed to freezing car parking charges if the party wins the elections in May.

“Shops are under a huge amount of pressure at the moment,” said Iain. “The council should be doing all it can to help local businesses thrive, not to make their lives more difficult.”

The Lib Dems are also campaigning for a Cheadle train station.

“We have parking problems in Cheadle because there’s no train or tram service so most people drive in. A Cheadle station would allow more people to come into the village on public transport – that’s the best way to take the pressure off our roads.” Iain said.

I think we are kidding ourselves about a reduction in traffic volume in cheadle if we get a station (I’m all for getting it up and running again) but we don’t have a proper integrated traffic/public transport system here (in the UK). The politicians answer (particularly Labour) is to tax tax tax. It always hits the low wage earner. £5 a day at the moment to park in cheadle is way too much. Also, I read somewhere, and I can’t find it now, that the increase in bicycles has increased pollution (where there are no bike lanes in particular) as it causes vehicles to run uneconomically by causing them to constantly vary their speeds.

Well the pollution hasnt come from the bicycles directly has it? And if we get a train or tram station then this may encourage people to leave their cars at home and stop clogging up the roads.

  2. Morag Ashworth says:

This is just going to further fuel the issue that the neighbouring streets have where people park all day, you can’t move down Milton Crescent during the day. This is crazy – they should be looking at more parking spaces and cheaper parking spaces.

  3. Bruce says:

First of all the station – why do we need one and where will it run to? Also surely it would increase traffic. I personally do not see the benefit.

Next the car park charges – it should be free to park for the first hour which would probably encourage more shoppers.

The recent extra double yellows on Wilmslow Road have only exacerbated the problem.

    • janet mcleod says:

What do you mean why do we need one? The transport system here is rubbish thats why. And not everybody can or wants to drive. Some have a medical condition such as epilepsy etc and arent able to drive. Also we need to cut down on traffic congestion, pollution from car fumes etc.

      • Bruce says:

Janet – the transport system is not that bad. I live in Gatley and can get to Manchester by train and Stockport by bus.

If you live in Cheadle you could easily get the number 11 bus to Stockport and then a train to Manchester

Any new station would be presumably near Lime Grove whose residents would then see a considerable increase in traffic.

Just go to Gatley station and see all the cars parked on the local roads not to mention all the vehicles collecting or dropping off commuters.

    • Iain Roberts says:

      Hi Bruce:

      1. The train that currently runs Manchester – Stockport – Altrincham – Chester could stop at Cheadle if we had a station. Better public transport reduces traffic on the roads: people who currently come to Cheadle by car could take the train instead.

      2. Car parking charges – that’s one option that should be looked at, if it’s affordable.

      3. The double-yellows on Wilmslow Road are there for safety reasons.

  4. Roy says:

The car park charges should be frozen and not increased and to raise the extra revenue lost by “not” increasing the parking charge a permanent Parking Enforcement Officer should be on duty in Cheadle enforcing parking restrictions and issuing tickets,
At the moment in Cheadle only those who obay the rules and pay for parking are targeted, others such as the White Mercedes which is parking every day ion the High Street in a unloading only zone get away with paying nothing. Not to mention the many who also choose to park in resident only zones and across peo0les drives.

  5. June says:

A more frequent bus service through Cheadle could help.

  6. Margaret cummins says:

It’s easy at moment to get to Stockport (so long as there are decent shops to get to?). Manchester is another thing and I think the answer is and excuse me for repeating myself but it would be great to have a circular bus going through Cheadle and having a stop at the Parrswood Tram Terminus saving the expense of a train station and the car parking problems in Cheadle. This would also serve the cinema complex. I live in hope.

    • Adrienne Conway says:

Totally agree, yes we can get to Stockport relatively easily, though the recent changes to bus timetables mean the busses aren’t as frequent but getting to Manchester and beyond has become increasingly difficult, particular in the early/late evening!

  7. JB says:

    Yes, Yes!

Please pursue the re-opening of Cheadle railway station! This would provide the quickest way to get to Stockport Manchester, Altrincham and Chester, etc. What is the current state of negotiations?

A shuttle bus to Parrs Wood tram stop would be useful but only if one’s going to a destination on the roundabout route thro’ Chorlton & Old Trafford, etc. Otherwise, its a slower journey time than the train.

  8. David Johnson says:

That’s strange there is not one mention of the most efficient mode of transport – LEGS! Not only is it low cost & have least environmental impact it is also the healthiest. Humans evolved from the apes after changing to land transport and evolving effective body parts. As a regular walker I am increasingly frustrated by big diversions to cross roads safely and avoiding illegal cycling on footpaths. The air pollution does not come from walkers. Please start to encourage walkers!
