Iain urges residents to report potholes to the Council

by Lib Dem team on 15 March, 2018

Cllr Iain Roberts is urging residents to report potholes to the Council.

“Like everywhere, we’re seeing more potholes after the freezing weather. Cold winters damage our roads and that means potholes have become bigger and new ones have turned up,” Iain said.

The Lib Dem team are calling on the Council to properly resurface some of the worst roads in the next year, as part of the Lib Dem £100m road and pavement repair programme. The other bad roads should be done over the next few years in that nine-year programme.

But we need potholes to repaired now, and there are some nasty ones.

If you spot a pothole, please take a minute to report it to the Council here.

Iain I know you are a dedicated hard working councillor, could you tell me what power as a councillor you have over the Council.
    Can you for instance:
Instruct the Council to make pavement repairs
Call the Council to book regarding overrun road works
Stop the Council doing multiple road works which cause massive congestion and inconvenience/pollution.
I just want to know what power to make a difference a good local Councillor has.

      Hi Roy,

Local councillors don’t really have those sorts of powers – we’re bound by the law dating back to 2001. What we can and do do is to try our best to get the council to do these things. Because we work hard, we often succeed, but not always.

The one way system going from the pyramid to the bus garage in Stockport is horrendous

I note that pavement repairs are underway on the High Street. Hopefully elsewhere will be included, because wherever the so called improvements were carried out similar faults have developed…
I wish to know who is footing the bill for rectifying this situation..Do you know,or will you ask the question please.

    • Lib Dem Team says:

Hi Janet – we think the bill is a mix, depending on whether the council has been able to demonstrate that the contractor was at fault (rather than wear-and-tear since). Unfortunately, because it has been left so long by the council despite our efforts, we think the taxpayers are picking up most of the bill.

Is there not a British Standard for the condition of the road surface and if so, is not the Council obliged to meet it?

Potholes have just caused me a large car suspension repair bill.

Potholes which look like puddles are the worst as you don’t know how deep they are. Its ridiculous that drivers are forced to wiggle from side to side of the road to avoid them.

Lobby the Govt. for more money if necessary – this and the reopening of Cheadle station is far more important than saving time going to London by HS2 which is costing £millions!

    • Lib Dem Team says:

Hi JB. There’s no British Standard for roads that I know of. Stockport’s standard is pretty similar to most other councils. We do ask the government for more money. Indeed, the 2015 and 2017 General Election campaigns in Cheadle were a choice between a Conservative candidate who’s party wanted to cut more, and a Lib Dem candidate who’s party wanted to cut less, and the voters made their decision. We keep on at it though – it’s a national problem.

Thank you for the reply…..seems to me the “improvements” to the village centre have proved to be a waste of my taxes….my understanding is that the pavements are checked on a monthly basis by a staff member….if this is true, what is the point? It’s wasting officer time because very little, if anything has resulted from those inspections. Further, once the works are finished, will the same inspection process be repeated?
Pouring good money after bad scenario!
As the representatives on the council I expect you will get a breakdown of the costings for these works. Please advise.

    Hi Iain,
Gatley Road from the Tatton to the railway is bad Drains are still blocked and need resetting.
Also Coniston Road and South Park estate have still got holes and very poor repairs have been carried out in some areas.
    The list is endless!
