Gatley to lose recycling facilities from this weekend

by Lib Dem team on 25 May, 2018

The Council has told the Lib Dem team today that the recycling containers in the car park by the Co-op will be removed this weekend and not replaced.

This follows the recycling facilities being removed from Cheadle earlier this year – on that occasion the Council didn’t give any advance notice at all.

Cllr Iain Roberts said “It’s disappointing that, yet again, Labour have decided to remove recycling facilities with no consultation and given us just one day’s notice. Labour often speak about the importance of consultation, but on this issue there’s been none. There are sensible reasons to consider removing the containers, but many people will now find it harder to recycle.”

Here’s what the Council have sent to the councillors today:

Recycling bringsites were introduced across Stockport in the 1990’s to enable residents to recycle their household waste
As you will know, the Council now provides households with kerbside collections for recyclable material – Paper/Card and Glass Bottles & Jars, Plastic Bottles, Tins & Cans ,Foil.

Recycling, contaminated with the wrong items, is becoming problematic across the UK. Increasing amounts of recyclate are being collated across Europe which is leading to an oversupply in the global wholesale markets. The price paid by merchants for material collected has fallen significantly and the quality threshold for material purchased by reprocessors has increased. Poor quality recyclate will be rejected and ultimately will have to be disposed of. These changes in end markets means we have to improve the quality of material collected – Removing these Bring Sites will contribute towards this aim as the sites suffer from higher rates of contamination than material collected via the kerbside.

The bringsites replicate the kerbside services hence to avoid the costs associated with maintaining bringsites and reduce the associated issues i.e. contamination, fly tipping, trade waste abuse – the council operated bringsites across Stockport will be removed over the next few weeks.

The recycling banks at Church Road Shops, Gatley will be removed this coming weekend and the areas will be cleansed.

The third party provided clothes, shoe book banks etc. will remain

Residents can request additional containers to supplement their existing to the kerbside containers. In addition residents will still be able to take their recyclable material to the Household Waste Recycling Centres at Bredbury, Adswood and Rose Hill. Additionally recycling facilities are provided by Sainsbury’s in Hazel Grove and Cheadle.

If they are just doubling up what is collected at kerbside then can’t see the problem of getting rid of, plus might give a few more car parking spaces.

  2. Iain Roberts says:

Arthur – that’s why we feel it’s important to consult. In Cheadle we’ve spoken to quite a few people who have had problems, despite the council saying otherwise.

I live in a flat and we don’t have recycling. If we had communal recycling at the flats then unfortunately I think that it would get contaminated. I used to use the facilities at Massie Street. Think that at Sainsbury’s we can’t recycle tetra paks and envelopes with the paper. Looks like I’ll have go to Adswood from now on.

  4. Jane says:

Why, with home recycling is cardboard (which can be compressed), collected every 2 weeks, yet tins and bottles is only once a month? We are constantly making trips to the tip. Disappointing considering how much we pay in council tax!

  5. Vanessa says:

The facility to recycle old clothing was useful and Stockport Council does not offer this as a part of the kerbside collection.

  6. Bruce says:

I must admit that the collection cycle for me is just about right. No complaints.

  7. Robert Cohen says:

It’s appalling. These community recycling bins offer a public service. It’s another reason why I believe local authorities (councils) should be run by the people for the people and NOT politicians who have an agenda not always entirely in tune with the needs of their employers – by employers I mean us the central and local tax payers. While I’m ranting, is there any chance cheadle can have more traffic wardens – parking on no parking yellows lines between 8 & 6 seems to go unpunished as do the drivers who come up the one ways (and sometimes park that way) at speed!

    • janet mcleod says:

How strange that you ask for more traffic wardens. Most people would ask for less of them. And the majority of double yellow lines appear to have been put there for no apparent reason other than to catch people out and then rob them blind for more funds for the government. The government who are taking things away from us daily, and making up extra charges for things that were once free.

  8. Luigi says:

Sorry, but I’m glad it’s being moved. It is an eyesore and quite embarrassing. A legitimate excuse for people to dump their rubbish in an irresponsible way.

  9. Jennifer says:

I agree with most of the messages posted, BUT so far except for cleaning the area, no extra parking has been provided where the recycling bins were in Cheadle.
As far as Robert Cohen’s message is concerned, what about the people who insist on turning right from Massie Street into the High Street in Cheadle?

I just noticed yesterday that there are new clothing abd shoe recycling bins on Cheadle car park near the exit to Ashfield crescent and social club … not Gatley i know… maybe a different spot could-be found in Gatley as i remember the ones near the co op used to overflow and rubbish spread around also they took up much needed car parking spaces …. not sure if there are places available though …,

The shoe recycling bins on Cheadle car park are attracting fly tippers.
I saw a rat coming out of a bag rubbish dumped by the side of the bins, with Cheadle primary school the other side of the fence I fear for the health of the children.

  12. Denise Williams says:

Checkout the Gatley site now. It is disgusting with horrible rubbish dumped all round the bins.

  13. John says:

Why is this country so far behind other EU countries with regard to waste collection?
I have heard reports that in Spain, for example, they empty waste bins every day, and I saw exactly the same in Portugal a few years ago.

    • John Hartley says:

John – the situation in Spain has much to commend it. As you say, it’s common for bins to emptied daily. However, folk don’t have their own bins – there’s usually a large communal one on the street somewhere, maybe a hundred yards away in urban areas (and much further out in the sticks), and you have to take your rubbish there. However, generally speaking, there’s only one bin, so no opportunity for recycling.
