Graham Greenhalgh writes:

To commemorate 100 years since the end of World War One local councillors are placing large poppies in Cheadle & Gatley and Cheadle Hulme wards. The poppies will be placed around the War Memorials, village centres, religious buildings and schools.

Additionally, Stockport Council have arranged to clean the masonry and polish the brass work on official War Memorials.

I see the poppies are already in place around the Gatley war memorial.

As part of the commemoration of the end of the war, Gatley Village Partnership is arranging “Peace Day” events on Saturday, 10 November. No doubt , they will be publishing full details in due course.

There will, of course, be the usual Remembrance Day commemoration on Sunday 11 November, perhaps more poignant than usual as it co-incides with the centenary of the armistice.

The Village Partnership has just published a new booklet – “Gatley – a village at war”. It tells the story of the “home front” in the village and has a large appendix containing mini-biographies of nearly 160 men connected with Gatley who served in the war. Lots of illustrations.

The booklet is available for download as a pdf from the Partnership’s website. And, with nearly 150 pages for just two quid, it’s an absolute bargain. All proceeds go to the Partnership to help it continue to support our community.
