The A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road (A6MARR) opened to traffic on Monday. Already the benefits are being seen, with less traffic in Heald Green and elsewhere.
“Someone told me this week that the road has instantly cut 30 minutes from their daily commute,” said Iain.
The full effects of the road will take a while to kick in, as people find out its open and figure out how it can save them journey time. SatNavs will also need to be updated so drivers are directed to use the new road instead of coming through our villages.

This ‘loser cruiser’ user welcomes this development – even if it is too late to witness the hoped for benefit to Gatley (less east><west traffic at the Kingsway junction)!

Yet another ill thought out project comes to fruition. 3 sets of traffic lights on a bypass? A Poynton resident tells me the set of lights at the Brookside garden centre have already created queues going back as far as Poynton centre. No local benefit there.
When will the A 34 be finished until then I can’t see any improvement for people going North and south of the area!!
My big concern is night driving. Very noticeable that in the East Cheshire parts they haven’t even put street lighting up . It’s also likely to be used by some very fast drivers.
Yes agree, traffic lights on a dual carriageway bypass seem a bad idea, especially as roundabouts dispense traffic more effectively, higher and speedier capacity. Problem with roundabouts is that they need a larger area of land.
On / off ramps are even better, less area and maximum traffic flow

I’m sorry but relief road is far from finished. You obviously have not been to Sanley Green/Handforth Dean. There is still misery on the A34 for thousands on a daily basis with lane and road closures. The council have had an additional 12 months at that location and still it looks like months away from completion. It is surely incompetence on a grand scale. Please advise when the by-pass will be finished?
Also Peter, accidents are occurring there as the road markings are very confusing. The temporary pedestrian lights are so close to the roundabout they appear to be for the traffic and cars are going when there is traffic on the roundabout – nightmare.
I work at Stanley Green and even though it’s not finished, I have already noticed an improvement with the volume of traffic on my commute particularly if I take the Heald Green route home.
Google Maps needs updating though as the bypass doesn’t exist on it, I’m surprised that so many people I talk to don’t even know it’s open now.
The relief road is great- despite some of the above mentioned problems.
Related: are the council mad approving the right turn into and the right turn out of the new Barnes hospital housing estate. This is potentially extremely dangerous due to (fast) moving traffic in both directions on the A34 – all of the time.
Ruth – absolute agreement on what you say – I have raised this a number of times with Iain and the council but to no avail. I cycle up the A34 on a regular basis and cars zoom past me at well over 40.

You are spot on.
Went there today. There is a single white line at the entrance to the roundabout and one on the roundabout. As Alan states it is confusing but it is bordering on being very dangerous.
Iain, is there a completion date?
I used the road this Sunday. Arriving at the Stanley Green roundabout the traffic lights are sited so as they appear to control traffic entering the roundabout which they do not. There is also many white lines which I mistook to be give way lines, again they are not. This is a dangerous junction that swiftly needs to be improved from a safety point.
