Local police report, 23 Feb – 1 March 2019

by Lib Dem team on 1 March, 2019

From our local Police:

An update on incidents and work in the Cheadle & Bramhall ward for the period Saturday 23rd February to Friday 1st March.

The headline news is the arrest, charge and remand of four men for a series of burglaries. Two were arrested on Tuesday. They appeared before the courts on Wednesday and were remanded to prison awaiting trial. Two more were arrested yesterday. They were remanded at Cheadle Heath police station overnight and are in court as I type. I fully expect them to be remanded to prison. This operation is on-going and I anticipate further arrests so I am reluctant to give any detail at this stage. I can say that I reviewed and authorised the search warrants which were placed before Magistrates at the start of the week, and was staggered at the amount of work that has gone into this investigation.

Burglaries continue to dominate the recorded crime statistics. There have been 22 recorded burglaries. As with previous weeks vehicles have been the target for many of the break ins. Likewise some of the burglaries were to sheds and garages rather than the house, and in a good proportion no entry was gained, either due to alarms being activated or the locks holding out. The main point of entry is via patio doors at the rear of the house, with offenders snapping the locks. I have heard that the locks can be upgraded relatively cheaply offering better protection. I don’t have any more details about these locks at this moment.

I went to a presentation this week about an anti-knife crime campaign that Stockport Youth Offending Services are rolling out to all local schools. We will be getting involved in the ‘Beat the Blade’ campaign. It looks to be very good and offers very real advice to young people regarding the risks and consequences of carrying a knife.

I also had the pleasure of helping at a Careers Fair at Cheadle College where I met so many positive and engaging students. It was the best few hours I have had in a while..

If I may be permitted a lighter moment we had a 999 call reporting a male running and ducking in and out of driveways at 3 in the morning. Patrols were on scene within a couple of minutes and detained the male. He was the local milkman who nearly passed out when cops screeched up and stopped him. I would always encourage people to report any suspicious activity. Officers are out there and always love a good chase.

Kind regards

Rob Hawksley

Burglary

There have been 22 recorded burglaries. The key hotspot has been Gatley where 8 crimes were recorded, and the thieves were clearly targeting vehicles parked on driveways. 5 vehicles were stolen from 3 addresses. No entry was gained in 3 of these crimes, and one burglary was to a garage. The second hotspot was Cheadle where 5 burglaries were reported. Two of these were to sheds. Vehicles were stolen from two addresses, one on Boundary Road and one on Palmer Avenue. The remaining crimes were dotted around the Neighbourhood with no real pattern.

It will be interesting to see how the arrest of the team referred to above impacts on crime figures.

Robbery

There have been 2 robberies reported this week.

One was at 19:45 hours on the 23rd February on St Anne’s Road North, Heald Green where a group of 9 offenders challenged a 13 year old and his friend and took his bike. The second robbery was at 15:45 hours on Gilbent Road, Cheadle on the 27th February. A 13 year old lad was riding his bike when he was stopped by a male who knocked him off the bike and took it. There were reports earlier of a male acting strangely in this area. The team are conducting cctv trawls and focusing on this area.

Theft of Motor Vehicle

There were 2 reports of Theft of Motor Vehicle. Both were stolen without keys, from driveways. One was on Hulme Hall Avenue, Cheadle Hulme. The other was on Argyle Road, Cheadle. Again, the owner has the keys to the vehicle.

Anti-Social Behaviour

This situation has improved over this week. There have been 6 reports of Anti-Social behaviour. These refer to specific individuals rather than groups of youths. So, we had a report of a drunk male on Councillor Lane, a male begging on Cheadle Hulme precinct, a youth riding a quad bike and a taxi dispute. I have not seen further reports from Hulme Hall Lane since the 11th February. I have asked for the additional patrols we have this weekend to include this area in their patrol plans. It would be interesting to know if Hulme Hall Road is still a hot-spot.

Well done GMP in these times of staff shortages! Too many staff not replaced leaves officers overworked and subject to great stress.

    Iain,

As you know a number of the Gatley burglaries where on our road and in one case the Owner was threatened with a knife.

We have a Whatsapp group set up with 44 contributing and a common theme is that the lights recently changed to lower power LED’s are not adequate. Most of the crimes happened AFTER that change of lights.

I know you have been contacted so we await your reply.

    Regards
    Neville
