Police funding will see more bobbies on the beat

by Lib Dem Team on 2 March, 2019

Liberal Democrats have been campaigning for more bobbies on the beat in our area. The truth is 80% of police funding comes from central government. This has been reduced by £250m since 2010 resulting in a loss of 2,000 police officers and 1,000 non-uniform staff.

This year the police grant included an additional £15m for GM Police but this only covers the police pension shortfall.

Now government has said local areas can increase the police precept (the money paid by local residents). As a result the 2019-20 Mayoral Police and Crime Commissioner Precept in Stockport will be increased by 46p per week for a Band D or 36p for a Band B property. On condition this money is used to  improve the GMP by:

  • recruit at least 320 additional police officers
  • continue to improve the 101 service
  • increase the grants to local authorities to fund community safety initiatives, and
  • tackle both serious and violent crime and violence against women and girls

During the budget debate in Full Council the LibDem group leader Cllr. Mark Hunter,  made it clear Stockport area must see the benefits of this additional money. Mark called on the Labour Executive for Stockport to ensure we are told of the improvements we will receive in terms of bobbies and services locally.
