by Lib Dem team on 18 March, 2019
As part of ongoing improvements to parks across the area, the Lib Dem team have secured council money to improve the tennis courts in Gatley Rec. There are two options and we want to know which you prefer – and if there are any tweaks you’d make to your preferred option.
Let us know what you think.

A bit off-topic but I had it in mind that, a couple or years back, there was talk of a cafe development on the Rec. Did that die the death or is it still “work in progress”?
Still work in progress, but some way off John.
I think option 2 is better.
Can I suggest that the children of Gatley Primary School and Broadway be consulted, through their physical training instructors,as a potential discussion group as it is these people who will be the main users of it now and for hopefully the foreseeable future.
Perhaps also the parents of these children be allowed to add suggestions as to safety etc.
It is a good idea to consult local schools – happy to confirm that we’re doing that.
It is genuinely quite ridiculous in how slow and behind the lib dems are. We asked to comment on the markings of a tennis courts for goodness sake.
Where is the consultation to improvements to local leisure facilities, a Gatley library, cafe in the park, regenerating our parks and green areas, modern community buildings. So behind the rest of Greater Manchester, appalling and a real dis-service to the people of Gatley.
Go and look what is taking place for communities in other areas and how fast they are doing it. We get told constantly its a long way off. More like will never hapen with these Councillors and their attitide to real change
Hi Moira – sorry you’re unhappy about being consulted on this. Money is tight everywhere, but the Lib Dems continue to press to get the best for Cheadle and Gatley – and to consult local people on what we’re doing.
Can you let me know this place in Greater Manchester which is getting a new library, cafe in the park, modern community buildings and regenerated parks. I’ll happily pay them a visit and speak to them about what they’re doing and whether we can copy their model in Gatley.
I agree with Keith. Those who are most likely to use it and benefit should have a strong input. Looks like a really good scheme.
option 2 – as it seems to allow more participants
but I agree with the others to allow the kids to have a say
Has any consideration been given to padel? The courts are smaller, so more can be accommodated in a given area. It may not require the skill levels of tennis, but participation is growing rapidly in those continental countries where it’s played and also in parts of Britain where it’s been introduced. Surely, numbers of participants is key.
Have the LTA been consulted for grants/interest free loans which you can apply for? Fletcher Moss got £220k for the redevelopment of the courts there (4 courts with floodlights & fencing) and MCC put the rest in.
Also Padel tennis is a good option to consider but the area requirements are not compatible. I looked at it for the Northern about 5 years ago & have all the plans if it’s of help. It depends on what you are trying to achieve and where the funding is from.
PS If it’s already ‘set in stone’ then in answer to your question…I believe Option 2 gives greater flexibility.
Thanks Neville – we’ll raise those points.
I am too ancient to judge children’s preferred options in today’s world but please preserve the space against developments for profit. As child in the thirties and forties the Rec was our fun space and the place to mix with others. Sport spaces are good but green grassed space is vital to allowing imaginations to be exercised.
Option 2 please.
There will be less fencing to repair when the hooligan’s congregate and cause damage.
Option 2. The tennis courts used to be well used when they were in a good state of repair.
Option 2 – my family use the tennis court, and this option provides more variety of sports
