Gatley Post Office: update

by Lib Dem team on 8 June, 2019

Gatley Post Office has now closed, so the village currently has no Post Office. For a village of 9000 people with no banks, it’s a bad situation and one the Lib Dem team want to reverse.

The last information we have from Post Office Ltd is that they see the closure as temporary and want to have a Post Office in Gatley. Other people have said other things.

We have been trying to contact the Post Office to get more information on exactly what is happening – we’ll report back as soon as we have those details.

This is not an isolated case – I read somewhere that there is a national crisis and a lot more sub-post offices are likely to close.

  2. Alan says:

Of course it’s not, the financial incompetence of this government has been laid bare for years and will continue until we have a change of government

    • Bruce says:

Alan – the biggest threat to this country is a Labour government led by Corbyn and his side kick .

Labour’s combination of unsustainable tax rises, deficit increases, and nationalisation projects based on delusional cost estimates, led by an economically illiterate team who have been openly hostile to business and the City for their entire careers, should have started ringing alarm bells long before now.

They also want to scrap all the trade union laws and also allow workers to go out in sympathy strikes for workers all over the world. Utter madness.

I could not have put this better Bruce. Well said.

      • Alan says:

economically illiterate? Surely you’re talking about the Tories? What paper do you and the other woman read? Can’t even be bothered to note her name she’s such an idiot. Do you have any grasp of economics whatsoever? You have to generate income to Run a country, you can’t run a country on a
low tax scenario ) as should be apparent to a thinking person)
Unfortunately the country is in the state it’s in because of dinosaurs like you!

That’s a real step back for Gatley. A retirement complex has just been built right across the road and then they take the post office away! We’ve got no banks either. I’d be annoyed if I’d put a deposit down on one of those retirement flats.

Iain – on your previous post on the subject, last month, you included a letter from the Post Office indicating the closure was due to the postmaster resigning. However, we were in there yesterday and were told that the closure was part of the Post Office ongoing programme of closures of sub post offices. Those are contradictory stories and it seems one side or the other is not being entirely straight.

Assuming that the original Post Office letter was accurate and they do indeed want a branch here, then the solution may well lie in the suggestion made by someone on the earlier blog post – that being for a new branch to be established in the Co-op when it opens at the Tatton site. I reckon that would be an excellent solution. The Co-op has its roots in communities and runs post offices in many of its shops.

  5. Mike dawber says:

Maybe someone could speak to the new coop owners to see if they would be interested(a nice new shop maybe)with a new post office inside.

  6. Brenda says:

I see there is a planning application notice on the post just outside the post office in Heald Green requesting to transfer the premises into part retail shop and part fast food outlet. Will the post office remain?? I have my doubts! Any more information on this planning application? I have tried to check on-line but no success so far.

  7. Les Leckie says:

The biggest threat facing this country is a no deal brexit. I think that trumps the other threats.

Anyway, shouldn’t the free market just cause another post office to pop up? What’s out MP doing about this? She has the ear of the government. Or doesn’t she?

  8. Brenda says:

With regard to my query on this site regarding the Heald Green post office, I have been able to find the details of the planning application and the post office is shown as part of the plan to request a retail shop and a hot food takeaway. I’m pleased we are not going to lose our post office. Thought it best to put the record straight!!
