A555 flooded again despite Council assurances

by Lib Dem team on 26 October, 2019

The Lib Dem team are calling for Stockport Council to explain why the A555 has flooded yet again, despite assurances that new pumps would keep the road open even during heavy rain, and to find a solution that fixes the problem.

“It’s not unreasonable for people to expect that this new road won’t flood every time we get heavy rain,” said Cllr Keith Holloway. “After the last floods in the summer, the Council assured us that new pumps had been installed that would stop the problem happening again, so it is very disappointing that the road had to be closed on Saturday morning.”

Pretty useless performance from SMBC – does anyone ever take responsibility for this failure.

Also I asked last week if the council had updated it’s penalty notice regulations for Cheadle east and west car parks so tickets could be used in either.lib dems campaigned earlier this year to sort this ridiculous policy out but then silence – what’s happened?

It will be virtually impossible to stop this road from flooding. It was built on marshland and should never have been built in the first place.

That’s the daftest thing I have read on here for years Janet.

      • janet mcleod says:

Ian why is that ridiculous? It was built on marshland.

I still say it should never have been built. It was built on streams too and the amount of wildlife and habitat that has been destroyed for this bloody road is criminal. Also I notice you are quick to criticize my comment here but many times I have asked perfectly reasonable questions on here and never ever got a reply. I mean I have just asked you why what I said is ridiculous but of course how stupid of me to expect a reasonable reply. All political parties are the same in that they are all in it together and all just as bad as each other for one reason or another.

It was built when you were in office so didn’t the Lib Dems get it sorted?

Building roads is not my area of expertise. However (you know what’s coming), it’s not the fault of any political party that it has a flooding problem, or that it was built on marshland. It’s the fault of the civil engineers and construction company. But the SMBC now have the responsibility for taking legal action and ensuring the matter is put right. The M62 at Rishworth/Moss Moors was by far more difficult and it’s rarely affected by the weather.

Same old repeated story, why do the so called experts not listen to those with local knowledge and others with common sense. I would also add, why would we expect success with this major project, when contractors provide such inadequate delivery of minor(for some) improvements as High Street pavements. Had we clawed back money from High St. scheme, perhaps more for the A555 drainage? (Just a thought)….

You’ve only got to travel across Europe, particularly France, Switzerland and Germany to appreciate how much better their road engineers are at overcoming natural features, climate and producing superb masterpieces of road engineering. The flooded A555 and the ‘Smart’ M6, a motorway with closures as frequently as it is fully open, are a national embarrassment. The road engineers responsible should be held to account. In fact, the A555 road engineers should now be made to done swimwear and go and bale out with buckets the mess that their incompetence produced.

Really? Can you expecting anything half decent from this atrocious council !!!!!

  8. The problem with the drainage may be linked to failing to comply with the maintenance requirement, causing the failure of the drainage including the pumps. I think Ian Roberts should confirm that their will be a public report issued detailing the reason of the problem and the remedial works required to prevent it reoccurring.

  9. There is far more going on than this, all of which is negligent. The A555 was built with inadequate drainage and malfunctioning pumps, but it also cut off the natural flood plain of the river systems. As far as I understand it, when roads are built, they are supposed to ensure adequate drainage is made below the new road, to allow rivers systems to reach their natural, and cut off flood plains. Of course, as the A555 floods, this drainage system is cut off too.
This is one of the reasons Poynton, Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme and Cheadle flooded so badly in July.
Of course, it doesn’t help that they are pumping the water towards the Lady Brook. They say they aren’t, but there is a whole raft of evidence which shows they are. It’s bordering on criminal negligence on an industrial scale.

The council ch,exec belongs in the monkey cage in a zoo, what a bunch of monkey brains. It should have been constructed differently, but theynapproved it.
