Shock as Barclays announce Cheadle branch closure

by Lib Dem team on 17 January, 2020

Barclays Bank has this week announced that they are closing their Cheadle High Street branch.

Cllr Keith Holloway said “This is very concerning news. Barclays was the last bank in Gatley and it closed despite a strong community campaign. We have heard from people how that closure has affected the village. Now the Cheadle branch is set to close too. If you are someone who will be affected by this closure in Cheadle, please let us know. We will be speaking to Barclays and we will need as much evidence as we can to put the case for retaining the branch or at least mitigating the effects of closure.”

Barclays say:

I would like to give you notice of a change Barclays is making in your ward. On Friday, 17 April 2020, we will be closing our branch at 72 High Street, Cheadle SK8 1AG.

The decision to close a branch is never an easy one; however, we are finding that customers are increasingly using other ways to do their everyday banking and the number of transactions taking place at the branch continues to decline by 22 per cent over the last 24 months. In addition, 92 per cent of our customers at Cheadle branch are also using alternative ways in which to undertake their banking including telephone and online banking.

This closure means our nearest branches will be at Didsbury, 753-755 Wilmslow Road, Manchester M20 6RN (2.1 miles), or 1 Bridge Street, Stockport SK1 1XU (3.1 miles). Everyday transactions, typically carried out over branch counters [including paying in a cheque, depositing cash and balance enquiries], can also be completed at any Post Office including those located at 2 Old Rectory Gardens, Wilmslow Road SK8 1BY (0.1 miles) and 136 Stockport Road, Cheadle SK8 2DP (0.5 miles).

I am not a Barclays customer but the bank has a point, albeit disappointing, if customer transactions are declining significantly.

Our Natwest account is held at their Didsbury branch, which was convenient for when we got married in 1972. We’ve never seen a need to move it. With the development of online services, it’s many years since we have needed to visit the branch – and then only once because we need to provide photo identification for something.

Sign of the times unfortunately. It was only the other day when passing thru the village and wondering which of the banks would be the next to close.

Barclays will not be the last either so who will be next?

I have a LLoyds account but I very rarely visit the Cheadle branch. On the rare occasions I do visit the branch it is only to get £5 notes from the cashier rather than the £10s from the cash point outside. Would I miss it – not really.

And I wouldn’t bother wasting your time contacting Barclays because they are not going to change their decision.

Close ALL banks – reduce their overheads. Transfer all banking business to Post Offices where you can obtain far better facilities such as post/travel money/ banking/parcel services etc.
Let’s face it – most baking property ends up as a ‘take-away’ outlet eventually

Is a lack of consideration. I do a lot ‘tintetnet banking – most of my payments come in via BACS. I bank with RBS (another shower). I believe with the profits Barclays are making they could retain a presence, even if only part time. I find it awful that I no longer have a business manager I can ring up (or email). The RBS have cast me off and are offering money for me to leave!

I used to bank with Barclays,( since I 1st started work in 1963) but after a row with them many, many years ago, I swapped to what is now Santander. We are lucky in this area as there are branches in Cheadle & Didsbury.
My husband has banked with them for over 60 years ( it was originally Martins Bank). Both of us find their service is not what it used to be. I echo all that Geoff & Bruce say. I wonder if banks are here for our convenience or theirs!
Cash machines rarely give a variety of notes which is a great shame. Areas where there are numerous students give a better variety.

  5. Victor says:

The only time I need to enter a bank is to get a £5 bag of 10p
    coins.
I only need these to pay for parking in Cheadle and Bramhall.
Why on earth don’t the ticket machines take contactless
    payment ?
If the ticket machines were contactless, Stockport wouldn’t have to employ someone to drive to all of the car parks in
order to collect the coins from the machines !

Nobody has mentioned the job losses or the effects on local businesses. Nowadays banks appear to be run increasingly for the benefit of their shareholders, including their chief executive officers and other head office staff who care little for their customers. I predict this will end in tears and more bailouts by taxpayers.

  7. Frederick kenny says:

Well of course the banks,as commercial organizations, are run for the benefit of shareholder- they own the businesses. This includes almost everyone via pension funds and investments – we all want good returns which would be ruined if organizations did not run them efficiently.

However any customer affected can easily in a one step process switch to another bank – they should do this it’s painless.

Perhaps the best is to switch to is first direct which is a telephone bank that often wins Customer satisfaction surveys otherwise there is still a good choice of traditional banks in Cheadle who will be delighted to take on your business.

  8. Davinder Chinna says:

Not surprising at all. Unfortunately Cheadle Village is finished. Online sales will only grow whereas rent and rates will increase forcing further business closures. Not helped if course by Stockport councils push to promote Stockport town centre/Red Rock over local village centres.

  9. J firmston says:

I will now be closing my account wich i have had since 1965. I will go to marks and spencer.
    Thanks a lot Barclays

  10. John H says:

Taylors fruit and veg went, then Beeleys followed by Hulme’s .
If Sainsburys had a barber I ‘d have no need for Cheadle village – SAD

  11. Lesley says:

Yes, we are all getting more savy with our banking habits, but I would like to advocate for our more senior members of the community. People use cheques still and can not do internet or telephone banking. I have a great app for Barclays which I can photograph a cheque to pay it in…wonderful,But it doesn’t work anymore and have to visit branch anyway !!! Didsbury not far but is there a bus route? Parking very difficult too….. Spend less on your TV adverts and you might save enough to have a reduced staff branch Barclays

  12. T says:

Simply take your ustom elsewhere, then they will learn, the big cheese at barclays must be a banker himself, i am certain of it, i,m sure he must be.

  13. Ex-banker says:

Pure, unadulterated greed. They ought to be ashamed. Awful.
