£10 fee requirement for pension-age travel pass

by Lib Dem team on 24 January, 2020

The Lib Dem team is warning anyone holding a pension-age concessionary travel pass or women’s concessionary travel pass from TfGM than they need to pay a £10 fee to use their passes from 1 February 2020.

The fee is required to use the pass on trams or trains, but not on buses. It does not apply to anyone with a concessionary pass for disabled people.

You can find all the information here.

“This new TfGM money-raising scheme is complex and has been poorly-advertised,” warned Cllr Keith Holloway. “We are very concerned that people will not know about it and be faced paying much higher fares when they try to travel on trams or train on 1st February. We urge anyone who has a pension-age or women’s concessionary pass from TfGM to check whether they need to pay the £10 fee.”

  1. My husband has just gone to Gatley co op to pay £10 for the new travel pass, to be told that the staff have not been given any information although the machine is there but they didn’t know anything about it or how to use it. This is a disgrace and yet another way to get money from pensioners, who in some cases may find £10 hard to pay, and can imagine this fee will increase next year, so we can’t pay the money, go on the tram in a day or two not being able to use the pass only to be fined. Just need people to be aware as we have only just found out about?

I paid the £10 supplement on both our passes at Tesco in Cheadle Village yesterday. I had no problem.

  3. The TfGM replied to my query about using the existing bus pass. They said that you can use the existing pass if you are only travelling on buses but need to change it for a new pass and pay £10 if you travel on trains &/or tram system.

I didn’t get a new pass from Piccadilly Gardens Travel Centre, just a paper receipt to show that I had paid £10.

  4. Trevor Gaunt says:

Yet another example of TfGM’s failure to encourage use of public transport.
Have any figures been given for usage of pensioner passes on trams and trains and anticipated revenue raised or usage reduction?

  5. You don’t need to change pass. Just pay £10 and it is loaded on to existing card. For all the moaners though there are a lot of well off pensioners out there who can pay this and a TV Licence. They should be means tested and genuine poor pensioners would get the benefits.

      To Mr Maycock.
Re your post “… For all the moaners though there are a lot of well off pensioners out there who can pay this and a TV Licence. They should be means tested and genuine poor pensioners would get the benefits. etc ” “Just pay £10 .. ” I can’t believe that i just read that. You are so disconnected with how most people live.

And what has TfGM got against pensioners using it’s trains and trams for travel?

  6. Alan says:

Let’s remember it’s a BUS PASS, use of train and tram has been a benefit granted by tfgm. £10 is the admin fee bringing it into line with other travel passes in GM. Agree it should be means tested for less well off pensioners. For me it’s still a bargain- it should be gold to reflect its value!!

    • John in Gatley says:

Reply to Trevor Gaunt. I agree with you. They want us to ditch our cars then they charge us for using the train. Who are these people that make these decisions???

I CANT UNDERSTAND WHY THERE WAS NEVER A YEARLY FEE TO BEGIN WITH, IT HAS ALWAYS PUZZLED ME, I HAVE A BLUE BADGE ASWELL AND I CANT UNDERSTAND WHY I GET FREE PARKING, FOR ME ITS THE CONVENIENCE THAT IS IMPORTANT, £10.00 FOR MY BLUE BADGE EVERY 3 YEARS , ABSOLUTE BARGAIN, BUT I WOULD BE QUITE WILING TO PAY TO TO PARK ASWELL.
AND £10.00, FOR MY TRAVEL PASS…..AN ABSOLUTE BARGAIN, TRAVEL FOR A WHOLE YEAR, WOW,
