Gatley lights queues to be improved

by Lib Dem team on 19 May, 2021

Following complaints from the Lib Dem about longer-than-usual queues at the Gatley lights junction, TfGM have investigated and confirmed there’s a problem with the traffic lights.

TfGM say:

The traffic signalled junctions in this area are controlled by SCOOT, which is an adaptive method of signal control that uses detectors within the carriageway to continually update the signal timings based on changing traffic demand.

In light of your feedback, engineers have reviewed the operation of the signals at this junction and discovered that several of the in-road vehicle detectors have been damaged, therefore the signal timings are not operating as effectively as they usually would. This has been escalated to our maintenance engineers and they are working to resolve the fault as quickly as possible and carry out repairs in the coming days.

Cllr Keith Holloway said “Thank you to the residents who raised this with us. The junction is bad enough when it’s working properly, and can be terrible when it’s not. Hopefully we’ll see an improvement in the next few days.”

I remember Scoot being introduced around the High Street area. Does it apply to the Wilmslow Rd/High St junction. If not,why not and can it be included? At present only 3 or so vehicles can move on. There is often a queue of traffic including heavy goods vehicles, on occasion back to Warren Avenue, and beyond.
The crossing lights on Gatley Rd, at Warren Ave are surely some of the slowest to respond. Is there a problem here?
I would welcome feedback please. Janet.

Hi Janet, yes it does apply. I’ve raised the issue of the junction with TfGM and we’ll keep monitoring. When I checked it yesterday afternoon, 8 or 9 vehicles got through on green.

I’ll have to find out about the crossing lights. Generally, I think pedestrians shouldn’t be made to wait to cross the road any longer than absolutely necessary, so I never really understand why those crossings seem to have a built in delay.

Whilst they are at it, can they investigate the new signalling arrangements at Roscoes Roundabout? If they are supposed to use SCOOT, they certainly don’t. Since renewal, during quiet periods, there is no detection or reaction to vehicles queuing. They simply operate on a timed sequence, arranged, I think, to suit rush-hour traffic.
This is a retrograde step, compared to how they operated previously.

Could you please give us an update on what the plan is to improve the Gatley lights congestion.
It’s been bad for years but the many housing developments being passed are further increasing the traffic load.

I’d like to see a camera put on Gatley Road / kingsway Lights to catch and prosecute the many drivers who jump the lights on red when travelling out of Gatley into Cheadle, it’s just a matter of time before there is a major accident, we need enforcement.

I had experienced increased waiting time getting out of the South Park Road estate. There did appear to be a problem with the timings. The time when the filtering right into Gatley at the lights has been shorter. It doesn’t help that when the lights change to go on Kingsway it signals a race between the leading three lanes and by the time they cars get up to the lip road into the estate, they have reached a dangerous speed. The same goes for cars within the estate rounding the one-way bend at numbers 14-8 come at a greater than safe speed. The minuscule 20mph sign on the lamppost at number 12 makes no difference. I think a set of mild speed bumps (sleeping Police) would help the situation and make backing out from numbers 8, 7 and 6 a safer option.

  6. June says:

Still no improvement for Cheadle to Gatley queues.,which often need 4 or more traffic light changes for a right turn.

  7. Like so many Lib Dem sponsored “improvements” the Gatley lights works a few years back merely replaced one unsatisfactory traffic system with another equally bad, at the cost of millions, paid for by the tax payer.

Gatley lights. Roscoe’s roundabout. Manchester road cycle scheme. All done with our money. All useless. Stick to litter-picking chaps.
