Thousands of bin collections missed

by Lib Dem team on 3 June, 2021

Complaints flooded in on Wednesday as thousands of green bin collections were missed right across Cheadle and Gatley, and into Cheadle Hulme.

Cllr Sheila Bailey, the Labour councillor in charge of bins, has issued a statement about the missed bin collections.

“Our waste collection contractors TLC have been experiencing increased levels of sickness and Covid self-isolation over the past few days and this has meant there were insufficient drivers available to complete all the rounds. Four rounds did not go out on Tuesday and six more yesterday. This level of disruption is likely to continue for the rest of the week. Those collections that were missed on Tuesday have been advised to leave their bins out and the crews will attempt to catch up over the next few days. For any other missed collections, we are advising residents to put their bin back out next week. I have asked that officers work with TLC to urgently identify the required additional resources to restore the full service next week.”

“If people are sick or self-isolating, they need to be off work,” said Cllr Keith Holloway, “But after a year of these issues, the Labour administration has failed to come up with a Plan B. Many people will have food waste uncollected for two or even three weeks in the hot weather. This is a major failure of the system and residents deserve better. “

Fully understand that there may be staff shortages. But why collect the blue bin (as happened yesterday) and leave the food waste in the green bin to rot for another week. Wrong priority.

  2. Shelley says:

Being the sceptic, school holidays and too many staff on annual leave spring to mind!

  3. Jane says:

How strange that when the sun comes out, sickness levels go right up!

  4. Roy says:

I contacted Iain about the none collection in Gatley and Cheadle both my daughter’s and my bin were full, Iain did his best but could not manage to get the bins emptied.

    4. I spoke to a council official who informed me that the Brinnington, Heaton Norris, and North and South Reddish would possibly be collected on Saturday, when I pointed out that the last missed bins should be collect first he failed to respond,

Brinnington / Heaton Norris / South Reddish / North Reddish are ALL LABOUR WARDS ,

Draw your own conclusion, I know what I think???

Possibly the same “solution” as Tory MP’s seats being awarded millions from the recent Towns Fund – even though they didn’t need it (Sunaks seat for example)

  5. Debbie Swindells says:

Our Council tax bill went up again. I pay for a service which I did not receive. Will I get a refund?

  6. Roy says:

    Alan
I’m concerned over my Council services paid for but not delivered, you may be more concerned with other parts of the country for all I know you don’t use a Green bin either that or you are a staunch Labour fan, either way the service I and others paid for Was Not delivered and my elected councillor was not afforded the same respect and power as other parties councillors, this is not acceptable.

  7. Denise says:

The bin men have continued to work all through lockdown and given us all great service.

I’m sorry that some of them are now suffering illness especially covid.

I thank them all for all their hard work.

    The bins can wait.

    • Pat says:

Jane, I agree: Half Term holiday plus our first ‘heatwave’ ; no Doctors’ appointments available for visit to provide proof of illness; self-diagnosed isolation ….Yes, they didn’t let us down during lockdown however call me a cynical old lady but this is too much of a coincidence.
Meanwhile, our food waste in poor quality green bags is rotting in burst bags. Not a sensible choice between blue and green bins in the temperatures we have experienced.

    • Alan says:

Well said Denise. They’re always cheerful, work
Damn hard and come out in all weathers.
They get my vote every time!!

  8. Sheila says:

I hope there’s a Plan B for next week in case we are informed our bins are too heavy to be emptied. The last time the green bin was missed we were told this and it took 4 weeks and a bin inspection to check the contents before it was reluctantly emptied
